Neurodevelopmental Outcomes

Neurodevelopmental outcomes are the cognitive, motor, behavioral, emotional, and social abilities that emerge as the brain develops, providing important measures of health across childhood and beyond. They reflect the interaction of genetic factors, brain maturation, synaptic connectivity, myelination, and environmental influences, including prenatal or early-life medical conditions. In medicine, clinicians and researchers evaluate these outcomes through developmental screening, standardized assessments, and longitudinal follow-up to identify delays, understand risks, and guide early intervention. Studying neurodevelopmental outcomes also helps assess the effects of disease, injury, medications, and supportive therapies on learning, functioning, and quality of life.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Preclinical Model of Prenatal Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Exposure to Assess Its Impact on Neurodevelopmental Outcomes

As legislative restrictions change, resulting in increased accessibility of cannabinoid products, it is critically important to develop models to study the impact of these exposures, particularly during pregnancy. A preclinical model of moderate prenatal cannabinoid exposure through voluntary ingestion has been developed, enabling more in-depth investigations.

Generation of iPSC-derived Human Brain Organoids to Model Early Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Modeling human brain development has been hindered due to the unprecedented complexity of neural epithelial tissue. Here, a method for the robust generation of brain organoids to delineate early events of human brain development and to model microcephaly in vitro is described.

Immunohistochemical Visualization of Hippocampal Neuron Activity After Spatial Learning in a Mouse Model of Neurodevelopmental Disorders

We describe an immunohistochemistry protocol to study the profile of hippocampal neuron activation following exposure to a spatial learning task in a mouse model characterized by cognitive deficits of neurodevelopmental origin. This protocol can be applied to both genetic or pharmacological mouse models characterized by cognitive deficits.
