Parental Vocal Interaction

Parental vocal interaction is the exchange of speech, singing, vocal soothing, and responsive sounds between caregivers and children, providing an important form of early communication and social connection. Through changes in pitch, rhythm, timing, and emotional tone, caregivers can respond to infant vocalizations and help regulate attention, arousal, and engagement. In medicine, studying these interactions supports assessment of early communication, parent-infant bonding, and developmental well-being, particularly in neonatal and pediatric care. Clinical programs may use guided vocal interaction to strengthen caregiver participation and inform approaches for infants who experience prematurity, illness, or developmental communication challenges.

2016

Mouse ultrasonic vocalizations are used as proxies to model the genetic bases of vocal communication deficits in mouse models for neuropsychiatric disorders. The present protocol describes three experimental contexts that reliably elicit ultrasonic vocalizations from pups (throughout development) and adult mice (same-sex interactions, male-estrus female interactions).

Parental Care

2026

Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young. Birds Parental care can occur even before hatching in birds, when parents sit on their eggs to incubate them. After hatching, the parents provide food for their offspring, and may continue to...

Construction and Characterization of a Novel Vocal Fold Bioreactor

A novel vocal fold bioreactor capable of delivering physiologically relevant, vibratory stimulation to cultured cells is constructed and characterized. This dynamic culture device, when combined with a fibrous poly(ε-caprolactone) scaffold, creates a vocal fold-mimetic environment that modulates the behaviors of mesenchymal stem cells.

Diana Baumrind's four parenting styles — authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and permissive — each influence children's socio-emotional development differently. Authoritarian Parenting This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably. Authoritative Parenting This...

Targeted Training of Ultrasonic Vocalizations in Aged and Parkinsonian Rats

Voice disorders are debilitating in aging and Parkinson disease. The ultrasonic vocalizations of rats, also affected by these conditions, can be used to study these voice disorders, their neural substrates, and the nature of functional recovery with behavioral intervention.
