Preoperative Prediction

Preoperative prediction is the use of patient-specific information to estimate surgical risks, likely outcomes, and perioperative needs before an operation. It combines factors such as medical history, physical findings, laboratory results, imaging, and the planned procedure, often using statistical or computational models to identify patterns associated with complications or recovery. In medicine, these predictions support risk stratification, informed consent, surgical planning, and allocation of monitoring or other resources. By helping clinicians and patients anticipate potential outcomes, preoperative prediction can guide individualized care and provide a foundation for evaluating and improving surgical decision-making.

Preoperational Thought IV: Numbers

2026

Piaget’s preoperational stage, from about ages 2 to 7, is characterized by rapid growth in symbolic thinking. Children increasingly use words, images, and objects to represent ideas, although their reasoning remains largely intuitive. During this period, number sense develops from memorized counting toward an understanding of quantity and basic arithmetic.Counting and CardinalityChildren younger than age 3 may recite number words without fully understanding their numerical meaning. During the...

Preoperational Thought I: The Symbolic Function

2026

Jean Piaget’s preoperational stage of cognitive development spans approximately ages 2 to 7. During this period, children increasingly think symbolically but are not yet able to perform logical mental operations consistently. Symbols are words, pictures, numbers, or objects that stand for something else. For example, the word "dog" can represent an entire category of animals, even when no dog is physically present. This ability allows children to mentally represent people, objects, and events...

VSEPR Theory for Determination of Electron Pair Geometries The following procedure uses VSEPR theory to determine the electron pair geometries and the molecular structures: Write the Lewis structure of the molecule or polyatomic ion. Count the number of electron groups (lone pairs and bonds) around the central atom. A single, double, or triple bond counts as one region of electron density. Identify the electron-pair geometry based on the number of electron groups: linear, trigonal planar,...

Conservation During the Preoperational Stage

Conservation is the understanding that quantity remains unchanged when appearance or arrangement changes, provided nothing is added or removed. Piaget used conservation tasks to examine children’s developing logical reasoning and their tendency to rely on perceptual appearance.Liquid Conservation TaskIn the classic liquid conservation task, a child is shown equal amounts of water in two identical short, wide glasses. The water from one glass is then poured into a taller, narrower glass. Many...

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.
