Ratings Perceived Exertion

Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) are subjective measures of how hard a person feels they are working during physical activity, providing a practical indicator of exercise intensity when objective measurements are unavailable. An individual selects a value on a standardized scale, such as the Borg scale, by integrating sensations including breathing difficulty, muscle fatigue, cardiovascular strain, and overall effort. In medicine and sports science, RPE supports exercise prescription, rehabilitation monitoring, and assessment of functional capacity, especially when heart rate is affected by medications or health conditions. Repeated ratings also help clinicians adjust training loads and evaluate changes in tolerance over time.

Perceiving Loudness, Pitch, and Location

2024

The human brain perceives pitch through two primary mechanisms reflected in place theory and frequency theory. Each mechanism describes how sound waves are interpreted as specific pitches by the brain, offering insights into the intricate processes of auditory perception. Place theory, or place coding, suggests that different pitches are heard because various sound waves activate specific locations along the cochlea's basilar membrane. The brain determines the pitch of a sound by identifying...
