Short Axis Sequence

A short axis sequence is a cardiac imaging series that produces cross-sectional views perpendicular to the heart’s long axis, allowing systematic assessment of ventricular anatomy and function. In cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, electrocardiographic gating synchronizes image acquisition with the cardiac cycle, while contiguous slices are collected from the ventricular base to the apex to create cine views. These images enable measurement of ventricular volumes, ejection fraction, wall thickness, and regional wall motion, and help identify ischemia, cardiomyopathy, myocardial scarring, and congenital abnormalities. As a standardized component of cardiac MRI, the sequence supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and longitudinal evaluation of cardiovascular disease.

Here, we describe the preparation of viable ventricular slices from adult mice and their use for sharp electrode action potential recordings. These multicellular preparations provide a preserved in vivo like tissue structure, which makes them a valuable model for electrophysiological and pharmacological studies in vitro.

We illustrate the use of a constant force axial optical tweezers to explore the mechanical properties of short DNA molecules. By stretching DNA axially, we minimize steric hindrances and artifacts arising in conventional lateral manipulation, allowing us to study DNA molecules as short as ~100 nm.

Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis

The response to stress—be it physical or psychological, acute or chronic—involves activation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis is part of the neuroendocrine system because it involves both neuronal and hormonal communication. Its function is to regulate homeostatic systems—metabolic, cardiovascular, and immune—providing the necessary means to respond to a stressor. What Happens During Stress In response to stress, the neurons in the hypothalamus release...

Short run

2024

The short run is defined not by a fixed timeframe, but by the condition in which at least one input in the production process remains fixed. The input whose quantity cannot be changed is called the fixed input. The input whose quantity can be changed is called the variable input. When all inputs can be changed, the time frame becomes the long run. Typically, the fixed input is capital, such as machinery or the physical size of a production facility, which cannot be easily or quickly changed. In...
