Small-incision Cataract

Small-incision cataract surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the eye’s clouded natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens to restore vision. Through a small corneal or scleral incision, the surgeon accesses the lens, breaks up or manually removes its opaque material, and positions the intraocular lens inside the capsular bag; the incision may seal without extensive suturing. This technique is widely used to treat age-related cataracts and can reduce surgical trauma, postoperative astigmatism, and recovery time compared with larger-incision approaches. It remains an important procedure in modern ophthalmology and in settings where efficient, cost-conscious cataract care is needed.

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the main risk factor for cataract development. An animal model of far UVR-B induced cataract was developed. In this article we describe methods for investigation of cataract formation: exposure to UVR, quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.

Described here is the establishment of a clinically relevant ex vivo mock cataract surgery model that can be used to investigate mechanisms of the injury response of epithelial tissues within their native microenvironment.

Metacarpal Small Incision for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel decompression with transverse carpal ligament transection is a very successful treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. The standard long-curved incision technique has become the best treatment for median nerve entrapment decompression. Here we introduce the metacarpal small incision carpal tunnel release (MSICTR) in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

This method models cataract surgery in vivo by removing lens fiber cells from adult mice and leaving behind the capsular bag with attached lens epithelial cells (LECs). The injury response is then assessed at various times post-surgery using molecular and morphological criteria.

Whole Mount Preparation of Mouse Intestine: Using a Simple Gut-incising Device to Prepare Whole Mount
