Task-oriented Training

Task-oriented training is a rehabilitation approach that uses purposeful, functional activities to improve a person’s ability to perform everyday tasks. Rather than practicing isolated movements alone, patients repeatedly perform goal-directed actions under progressively adjusted conditions, while clinicians provide feedback and modify task demands to promote motor learning, problem-solving, and adaptation. In medicine, this approach supports recovery after stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions that affect movement or function. By linking therapy to meaningful activities such as reaching, walking, dressing, or transferring, task-oriented training can help translate clinical gains into greater independence in daily life.

Assessing Dexterity with Reaching Tasks

2023

Reaching tasks are employed in behavioral neuroscience to investigate motor learning and forelimb dexterity. Much like human hands, rodents have dexterous forepaws, which are necessary for executing coordinated and precise motor movements. Experimenters may utilize food rewards to train rodents to reach and for testing their reaching abilities. These tasks help behavioral neuroscientist in understanding how CNS injuries, such as a stroke, may impair reaching ability and dexterity in humans.

This protocol describes the 5-choice serial reaction time task, which is an operant based task used to study attention and impulse control in rodents. Test day challenges, which are modifications of the standard task, increase flexibility of the task and can be combined with other manipulations to more fully characterize behavior.

Piaget's Conservation Task and the Influence of Task Demands

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Jean Piaget was a pioneer in the field of developmental psychology, and his theory of cognitive development is one of the most well-known psychological theories. At the heart of Piaget’s theory is the idea that children’s ways of thinking change over the course of childhood. Piaget provided evidence for these changes by comparing how children of different ages responded to questions and problems that he...
