Time Course Study

A time course study is a research design that tracks how a biological process, disease, treatment response, or clinical measurement changes over a defined period. By collecting observations at multiple time points, researchers can characterize temporal patterns, identify when effects emerge or fade, and distinguish short-term responses from lasting changes. In medicine, time course studies help evaluate disease progression, monitor patient outcomes, determine the timing of therapeutic effects, and guide the scheduling of assessments or interventions. They can also reveal delayed or transient responses that a single measurement would miss, supporting more precise interpretation of biological mechanisms and clinical data.

Source: Oms, T., et al. Population and Single-Cell Analysis of Antibiotic Persistence in Escherichia coli. J. Vis. Exp. (2023)This video presents a protocol for monitoring individual bacterial cells expressing a fluorescently labeled DNA-binding protein within a microfluidic system. It illustrates how antibiotics inhibit most cells, while a subpopulation of persister cells survives the treatment and regrows following antibiotic removal.
