Topical Heart Cooling

Topical heart cooling is a medical technique that lowers the temperature of the heart by applying a cooled solution, pad, or other cooling material directly to its surface. Reduced myocardial temperature slows cellular metabolism and decreases the heart’s demand for oxygen, which can help limit tissue injury when blood flow is temporarily interrupted. In cardiac surgery and related procedures, topical cooling may complement other methods of myocardial protection during periods of reduced circulation or cardiac arrest. Understanding its effects supports safer procedure design and research into strategies that preserve heart function during ischemic stress.

Innovative Strategies for Organ Preservation in Heart Transplantation: Uniform Cooling Preservation and Ex-situ Normothermic Perfusion

2025

Donor heart preservation is a major determinant of success in heart transplantation. Technological advances have led to optimizing the conditions of preservation, along with a more accurate assessment of the donor heart before transplantation. We herein describe two innovative technologies currently applied for cardiac preservation: uniform cooling preservation and normothermic ex-situ heart perfusion.

Heating and Cooling Curves

2020

When a substance—isolated from its environment—is subjected to heat changes, corresponding changes in temperature and phase of the substance is observed; this is graphically represented by heating and cooling curves. For instance, the addition of heat raises the temperature of a solid; the amount of heat absorbed depends on the heat capacity of the solid (q = mcsolidΔT). According to thermochemistry, the relation between the amount of heat absorbed or released by a substance, q, and its...

2014

This is a case report of a patient with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) who received a total artificial heart (TAH) as a bridge to heart transplant. The TAH was successfully implanted with modifications to accommodate the patient's congenitally malformed heart.

Topical Testing Assay: A Technique to Evaluate the Insecticidal Potential of Dopamine Receptor Antagonists on Adult Female Mosquitoes by Topical Application

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the topical testing assay to determine the toxicity of a potential insecticide on adult female mosquitoes. Using a dopamine receptor antagonist that causes lethal inhibition of neurotransmission in mosquitoes, this method describes a way to evaluate the toxic effects of insecticides upon topical application.

Recovery of Adult Zebrafish Hearts for High-throughput Applications

Use of zebrafish for cardiovascular research is expanding towards research on adult hearts. For these applications, quick and simple isolation of cardiac tissues is key to avoid post-mortem changes and to obtain an adequate number of samples. Here, we describe a fast and reproducible method for dissecting adult zebrafish hearts.
