Uterine Lavage

Uterine lavage is a procedure that introduces sterile fluid into the uterine cavity and recovers it for diagnostic sampling or removal of intrauterine contents, depending on the clinical context. During the procedure, fluid is delivered through a catheter and withdrawn after mixing with cells, microorganisms, secretions, or other material from the endometrium; the recovered sample can undergo cytological, microbiological, or molecular analysis. In medicine, uterine lavage supports investigation of intrauterine inflammation, infection, and reproductive disorders, while research applications use lavage fluid to study uterine biomarkers and local physiology.

We describe a research technique for fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage using low pressure suction. The technique is used to harvest immune cells from the lung bronchoalveolar surfaces. Local anesthetic and mild conscious sedation (midazolam) is used. Subjects tolerate the procedure well and experience minimal side effects.

The uterine or fallopian tubes function as the conduit through which oocytes travel from the ovaries to the uterus. Each fallopian tube measures approximately 10 to 13 cm long and is anatomically divided into the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, and interstitial part (or intramural segment). The infundibulum is characterized by its funnel shape and features extensions called fimbriae which reach towards the peritoneal cavity. These fimbriae play a critical role during ovulation as they extend...

The health status of the lung is reflected by the type and number of immune cells that are present in the bronchioles of the lung. We describe a bronchoalveolar lavage technique that allows the isolation and study of nonadherent cells and soluble factors from the lower respiratory tract of mice.
