Arterial Blood Sampling

Arterial blood sampling is a clinical and research technique that collects blood directly from an artery to assess oxygenation, ventilation, and acid-base status. After an arterial puncture, commonly at the radial artery, the sample is analyzed for parameters such as partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide, pH, bicarbonate, and oxygen saturation, often using a blood-gas analyzer. In neuroscience, these measurements help evaluate systemic factors that influence brain function, including respiratory failure, impaired cerebral oxygen delivery, and metabolic disturbances. Results can guide monitoring and treatment in neurocritical care, anesthesia, and studies of brain-body physiology.

2012

Chronic catheterization of blood vessels in the rat is often required for administration of substances, obtain blood sample over a period of time or for direct conscious blood pressure measurements. Femoral arterial catheterization of the rat and corresponding measurements of blood pressure in the conscious animal will be demonstrated.

Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Assess Blood Flow in the Arteries of a Rat

2025

Source: Chiu, S., et al. Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Rat Common Carotid Artery. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to measure blood flow in the common carotid artery of a rat. After securing an anesthetized rat on the MRI bed and ensuring stable physiological parameters, the common carotid artery is scanned to capture images at defined intervals. Blood flow is then computed from these images to evaluate changes...

A Comprehensive Rat Model For Assessing Hepatic Transport Pathways Through Simultaneous Lymphatic And Blood Vascular Sampling

2026

This experimental protocol describes a hepatic lymph duct-cannulated rat model that enables direct and quantitative assessment of hepatic lymphatic and vascular drainage. The model allows simultaneous sampling of hepatic lymph and systemic blood to investigate hepatic transport, metabolism, and immune signaling, supporting studies of drug pharmacokinetics and liver-specific biology.

Detection of Rhesus Factor in Human Blood Samples using Magnetic Levitation

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of the Rhesus (Rh) factor in blood samples using a magnetic levitation instrument. The magnetic field aligns and levitates beads and blood cells based on density. Treating the samples with anti-Rh antibodies results in intermediate-density bead-cell complexes' formation, allowing for the differentiation of Rh-positive and Rh-negative red blood cells.
