Behavioral Electrophysiological Experiments

Behavioral electrophysiological experiments combine measurements of neural electrical activity with observed behavior to reveal how nervous systems generate perception, movement, learning, and decision-making. In these studies, electrodes record voltage changes from individual neurons, groups of cells, or larger brain regions while an animal or human performs a controlled task; researchers then align neural signals with behavioral events and analyze their timing, frequency, and stimulus selectivity. This approach links cellular and circuit activity to measurable actions, helping identify neural correlates of cognition and behavior. It supports research on sensory processing, motor control, memory, disease mechanisms, and the development of neuroscience-based interventions.

2008

Planar lipid bilayers, also called artificial lipid bilayers, allow you to study ion-conducting channels in a well-defined environment. Here, we demonstrate the individual steps needed to prepare the bilayer chamber, the electrodes and how to test that the bilayer is suitable for single-channel measurements.

This manuscript describes a protocol that applies comprehensive profiling for analysis of transcriptional programs induced in specific brain nuclei of rodents following behavioral paradigms. Herein, this approach is illustrated in the context of profiling genes induced in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of mice following acute cocaine exposure, utilizing microfluidic qPCR arrays.
