Contusion Injury

A contusion injury is a tissue bruise caused by blunt force, and in neuroscience it commonly refers to localized damage to the brain or spinal cord that can impair neural function. An impact compresses and shears nervous tissue, ruptures small blood vessels, and disrupts the blood-brain or blood-spinal cord barrier, producing hemorrhage, edema, inflammation, and secondary neuronal injury. Researchers study contusion injuries using controlled experimental models, imaging, histology, and behavioral assessments to relate tissue damage to changes in sensation, movement, and cognition. This work supports the evaluation of neuroprotective treatments, rehabilitation strategies, and mechanisms that influence recovery after traumatic nervous system injury.

2015

Vertebral stabilization is necessary for minimizing variability, and for producing consistent experimental spinal cord injuries. Using a customized stabilizing apparatus in conjunction with the NYU/MASCIS impactor device, we have demonstrated here the proper equipment and procedure for generating reproducible hemi-contusive cervical (C5) spinal cord injuries in adult rats.

A reliable and repeatable way to produce a cervical unilateral spinal cord injury using the Infinite Horizon impactor is described. The method takes advantage of a custom designed frame and clamp to stabilize the spine. The standardized procedure and biomechanical injury parameters result in sufficient and sustained injuries.

Inducing a Spinal Cord Contusion in a Mouse Model Using a Spinal Cord Injury Coaxial Platform

Source: Elzat, E. Y. Y., et al., Establishing a Mouse Contusion Spinal Cord Injury Model Based on a Minimally Invasive Technique. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the method for inducing a contusion injury at the T9 level spinal cord in a mouse model, using a spinal cord injury coaxial platform. A weight is dropped on the T9 level spinal cord that creates a contusion that immediately causes tissue discoloration and swelling.
