Drill Bone Removal

Drill bone removal is a surgical technique that uses a powered drill to create an opening in bone, most commonly the skull, providing access to structures beneath it. In neuroscience, the surgeon removes a controlled section of cranial bone by advancing a cutting or burr tool along a planned path while managing bone fragments, vibration, and heat. This access supports procedures such as neurosurgical treatment, brain imaging-related interventions, and placement of recording or stimulation electrodes. Careful removal and subsequent reconstruction help protect neural tissue, maintain surgical precision, and support recovery.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

A Stereotactically Guided Ablation Technique for Auditory Cortex Removal in Rats

This video demonstrates a stereotactically-guided surgical procedure for ablating the auditory cortex in a rat. The steps include identifying anatomical landmarks in an anesthetized rat secured in a stereotactic frame, creating a window on the skull above the auditory cortex, aspirating the cortical layers, and providing post-operative care to assess the impact of the ablation on sound processing.
