Electric Organ Discharge

Electric organ discharge is the production of brief or continuous electrical signals by specialized organs in certain aquatic animals, providing a means of sensing, communicating, or defending against threats. In electric fish, motor neurons activate rows of electrocytes, causing synchronized membrane depolarization that generates an electric field in the surrounding water; sensory receptors detect changes in this field. Neuroscience research examines how brain circuits control discharge timing and how sensory systems interpret electrical feedback. Studying these signals clarifies neural coding, sensorimotor integration, animal behavior, and the evolution of specialized biological communication systems.

This manuscript describes the bending process of an organic single crystal-based field-effect transistor to maintain a functioning device for electronic property measurement. The results suggest that bending causes changes in the molecular spacing in the crystal and thus in the charge hopping rate, which is important in flexible electronics.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...

RC Circuits: Discharging A Capacitor

2025

One of the applications of an RC circuit is the relaxation oscillator. The relaxation oscillator comprises a voltage source, a capacitor, a resistor, and a neon lamp. The lamp acts like an open circuit (infinite resistance) until the potential difference across the neon lamp reaches a specific voltage. At that voltage, the lamp acts like a short circuit (zero resistance), and the capacitor discharges through the neon lamp and produces light. Once the capacitor is fully discharged through the...
