Epilepsy Drug Discovery

Epilepsy drug discovery is the process of identifying and developing medicines that prevent or reduce seizures by modifying abnormal neuronal activity. In neuroscience research, scientists screen compounds against targets such as voltage-gated ion channels and neurotransmitter systems, then evaluate their effects in cellular assays and experimental seizure models. Promising candidates are assessed for efficacy, selectivity, pharmacokinetics, and potential toxicity before advancing toward clinical studies. This work supports the development of treatments for drug-resistant epilepsy, where existing therapies provide inadequate seizure control, and may reveal biological mechanisms that improve precision treatment and guide the design of safer, more effective anticonvulsant drugs.

Drug Discovery: Overview

2023

Drug discovery is a multifaceted process involving extensive screening, testing, and optimization of lead compounds to identify potential new drugs for therapeutic use. It combines several approaches, including screening large numbers of natural products, chemical modification of known active molecules, identification of new drug targets, and rational design based on biological mechanisms and drug-receptor structure. These approaches are carried out in both academic research laboratories and...

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.
