Flat-sided Tubes

Flat-sided tubes are laboratory sample holders with one or more planar walls that provide a stable geometry for containing, positioning, and observing specimens or solutions. The flat surface limits rolling and establishes a consistent orientation, while the tube’s enclosed volume supports controlled handling and compatibility with optical instruments. In neuroscience, these tubes can facilitate microscopy, behavioral assays, and preparation of neural tissues, cells, or model organisms when repeatable positioning and clear visual access are important. Their simple design improves experimental consistency, reduces handling variability, and supports reliable imaging and measurement across neuroscience workflows.

Flat Belts: Problem Solving

2023

Flat belts are crucial in many industrial applications as they help transmit power from one pulley to another. The concept of forces and moments is used to determine the maximum moment on a pulley. For instance, consider a flat belt that wraps around two pulleys, A and B, with radii of 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. The angle between the belt and the horizontal is 20 degrees at the pulleys. As pulley B rotates clockwise and drives pulley A, tension T2 is caused at one end of the belt, while...

Dissection and Flat-mounting of the Threespine Stickleback Branchial Skeleton

The branchial skeleton, including gill rakers, pharyngeal teeth, and branchial bones, serves as the primary site of food processing in most fish. Here we describe a protocol to dissect and flat-mount this internal skeleton in threespine sticklebacks. This method is also applicable to a variety of other fish species.

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement) is a procedure during which a hollow tube is inserted into the thoracic cavity for drainage of fluid or air. Emergency chest tube insertion is performed for definitive treatment of tension pneumothorax, traumatic hemothorax, large-volume pleural effusions, and empyemas. Irrespective of the cause of air and fluid accumulation in the pleural space, the...
