Glial Derived Neurotrophic Factor

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a secreted protein that supports the survival, growth, and function of specific neurons, making it important in nervous system development and repair. GDNF binds a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored GFRα co-receptor and activates the RET receptor tyrosine kinase, triggering intracellular pathways such as PI3K-AKT and MAPK. In neuroscience, researchers study GDNF signaling in dopaminergic neurons, motor neurons, and enteric neurons, where it influences maintenance and regeneration. This work informs investigations of Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, neurodegeneration, and potential neuroprotective therapies, while also clarifying how targeted growth-factor signaling shapes neuronal resilience.

Establishing a Three-Dimensional Culture of Rat Brain-Derived Glial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates a technique to establish a three-dimensional culture of glial cells. Rat-brain-derived glial cells are encapsulated within a photocrosslinkable polymer matrix containing extracellular matrix components. Upon incubating in a growth medium, the glial cells proliferate within the supporting matrix to create a three-dimensional culture.

Generating Neurons and Glial Cells from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Embryoid Bodies

2025

This video demonstrates the process of differentiating embryoid bodies (EBs) into neuroepithelial aggregates and their subsequent division into neuronal and glial cells. This method allows the efficient generation of neuronal and glial cells in vitro, which serve as test systems for toxicity testing as well as assessment of different pathways involved in neurotoxicity.

Obtaining a Mixed Glial Cell Culture from a Neonatal Mouse Brain

2025

The video demonstrated the method of isolating and culturing cells from a neonatal mouse brain. It involved enzymatic and mechanical dissociation of the brain, followed by culturing in growth media lacking neuronal growth factor to obtain a mixed glial population.

Isolating Enteric Glial Cells From the Submucosa and Lamina Propria of a Mouse

2025

This video demonstrates a method for isolating enteric glial cells from the submucosa and lamina propria of the mouse intestine. It outlines the steps involved in extracting submucosa and lamina propria tissue, isolating the enteric glial cells from them, and culturing the cells on a coated well-plate to establish an enteric glial cell culture.
