Hardware Software Setup

Hardware software setup is the coordinated configuration of physical devices and computer programs needed to acquire, process, and analyze scientific data. In neuroscience, sensors or recording instruments convert neural activity into electrical or other measurable signals, while software controls acquisition settings, synchronizes devices, and applies preprocessing to organize the resulting data. A reliable setup supports experiments involving brain activity, behavior, stimulation, and imaging by improving measurement consistency and reducing technical errors. Careful integration of hardware and software also enables reproducible workflows, efficient data analysis, and adaptation of research systems to different experimental designs.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.

Neural control and cognitive processes can be studied through eye movements. The VisualEyes software allows an operator to program stimuli on two computer screens independently using a simple, custom scripting language. The system can stimulate tandem eye movements (saccades and smooth pursuit) or opposing eye movements (vergence) or any combination.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, electromyography, and 3D motion capture are commonly used non-invasive techniques for investigating neuromuscular function in humans. In this paper, we describe a protocol that synchronously samples data generated by all three of these tools along with the unique addition of virtual reality stimulus presentation and feedback.
