In Vivo Muscle Manipulation

In vivo muscle manipulation encompasses experimental methods that alter or measure muscle activity, force, length, or mechanical load within a living organism, allowing researchers to study neuromuscular function in its physiological context. Investigators manipulate muscles through controlled stimulation, movement, loading, or surgical intervention, then relate resulting contractions and sensory feedback to motor-neuron activity, reflexes, and behavior. In neuroscience, these approaches clarify how the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and proprioceptive receptors coordinate movement while preserving interactions among muscles, joints, and sensory pathways. They support studies of motor control, plasticity, injury, and disease, and help evaluate therapies or neural interfaces by linking cellular mechanisms to whole-organism function.

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...
