Live Image Preview

Live image preview is the real-time display of images as they are acquired, allowing researchers to assess visual data before completing an imaging session. In neuroscience, imaging software updates the preview during acquisition so users can monitor sample visibility, focus, field of view, signal quality, and the effects of settings such as illumination or exposure. This immediate feedback helps optimize microscopy experiments, identify acquisition problems early, and reduce unusable data. Live image preview supports work with neuronal cultures, brain tissue, and in vivo preparations by improving experimental control and enabling more efficient collection of high-quality images for quantitative analysis.

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles. Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Live Cell Imaging of Mitosis

Mitosis is a form of cell division in which a cell’s genetic material is divided equally between two daughter cells. Mitosis can be broken down into six phases, during each of which the cell’s components, such as its chromosomes, show visually distinct characteristics. Advances in fluorescence live cell imaging have allowed scientists to study this process in great detail, providing important insights into the biological control of this process and how it might go wrong in diseases such as...

Preparation of Living Isolated Vertebrate Photoreceptor Cells for Fluorescence Imaging

2011

A method is described for the preparation of single living photoreceptor cells from different vertebrate species for fluorescence imaging. The method can be used to image the fluorescence of endogenous fluorophores, such as NADH or vitamin A, or that of exogenously added fluorescent dyes sensitive to Ca2+ or other factors.
