Locomotor Deficit Analysis

Locomotor deficit analysis is the systematic assessment of impaired movement, providing objective evidence of changes in motor function and neural control. In neuroscience, researchers quantify features such as walking speed, distance traveled, stride pattern, coordination, and balance through behavioral assays, video-based tracking, or kinematic measurements, then compare results with baseline or control groups. These measures help link movement abnormalities to injury, neurodegeneration, genetic alterations, drug exposure, or experimental manipulation of motor circuits. By converting observable behavior into quantifiable outcomes, locomotor deficit analysis supports disease modeling, evaluation of therapeutic interventions, and investigation of how the brain and spinal cord regulate movement.

The island assay is a relatively new, cost-effective assay that can be used to evaluate the basic locomotor behavior of Drosophila melanogaster. This manuscript describes algorithms for automatic data processing and objective quantification of island assay data, making this assay a sensitive, high-throughput readout for large genetic or pharmacological screens.

Locomotor activity (LMA) is a simple and easily performed measurement of behavior in mice. Coupling of video tracking software (VTS) and LMA allows for the improvement of specificity and sensitivity, especially when compared with the manual, line crossing method of LMA analysis. Additionally VTS allows long-term tracking of mouse LMA.
