Muscle Tissue

Muscle tissue is specialized tissue that generates force through contraction, enabling movement, posture, circulation, and internal organ function. Its cells, called muscle fibers, convert chemical energy into mechanical work when actin and myosin filaments slide past one another in response to calcium-dependent signaling. In neuroscience, skeletal muscle provides the principal output of motor neurons: action potentials at neuromuscular junctions trigger acetylcholine release, which initiates excitation-contraction coupling, while sensory feedback from muscles informs the nervous system about movement and position. Studying muscle tissue therefore helps explain motor control, reflexes, neuromuscular disorders, and the effects of nerve injury.

Overview of Muscle Tissues

The human body has three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. Each class has unique properties that enable them to perform specific functions. However, all muscle tissues share certain properties, including elasticity, contractility, and excitability. Elasticity Elasticity is the ability of muscles to stretch and return to their original shape. This property is partly due to elastic fibers — macromolecules that run through the muscles. These fibers are firm and resilient,...
