Neural Recordings

Neural recordings are methods for measuring the electrical or chemical activity of neurons, providing direct evidence of how nervous systems process information. In electrophysiological recordings, electrodes detect voltage changes produced by ion movement across neuronal membranes, capturing signals such as action potentials, local field potentials, or population activity; related approaches can monitor intracellular events or calcium dynamics. In neuroscience, these measurements help link neural activity to sensation, movement, cognition, and behavior. Neural recordings support studies of brain circuits, neurological disorders, and brain-computer interfaces, while advances in miniaturized electrodes and high-density sensors are enabling more precise recordings from larger neural populations.

The design and assembly of microdrives for in vivo electrophysiological recordings of brain signals from the mouse is described. By attaching microelectrode bundles to sturdy driveable carriers, these techniques allow for long-term and stable neural recordings. The lightweight design allows for unrestricted behavioral performance by the animal following drive implantation.

Different electrode coatings affect neural recording performance through changes to electrochemical, chemical and mechanical properties. Comparison of electrodes in vitro is relatively simple, however comparison of in vivo response is typically complicated by variations in electrode/neuron distance and between animals. This article provides a robust method to compare neural recording electrodes.
