Orofacial Neuropathy Treatment

Orofacial neuropathy treatment encompasses clinical strategies for reducing pain and sensory dysfunction caused by injury, compression, inflammation, or disease affecting cranial sensory nerves, especially the trigeminal system. It matters because these disorders can impair eating, speaking, sleep, and quality of life. Treatment works by addressing the underlying cause and modulating abnormal nerve excitability and pain signaling in peripheral and central pathways. Depending on the diagnosis, care may combine medications, local injections or nerve blocks, surgery, neuromodulation, and rehabilitation to restore function and limit persistent pain. In neuroscience, studying treatment responses clarifies sensory-processing mechanisms and supports more precise approaches for traumatic, inflammatory, or idiopathic orofacial neuropathies.

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of orofacial neuropathic pain in a rat model by ligating the infraorbital nerve. This results in nerve damage and inflammation, causing abnormal pain signaling and mimicking chronic pain conditions, which can be used to study the orofacial pain assay.

The goal of this protocol is to photochemically induce ischemic injury to the posterior optic nerve in rat. This model is critical to studies of the pathophysiology of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and therapeutic approaches for this and other optic neuropathies, as well as of other CNS ischemic diseases.

We present a user-friendly, high-throughput operant system for the evaluation of pain behaviors in awake, conscious rodents. The Orofacial Pain Assessment Device (OPAD) can assess pain through a reward/conflict paradigm thus providing a more humane way of testing. This protocol will yield more clinically relevant and translational data from rodents.

DefinitionDiabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by long-standing diabetes mellitus. It results directly from prolonged high blood sugar levels.PathophysiologyThe pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy involves both metabolic and vascular disturbances triggered by chronic hyperglycemia.Metabolic injury: Elevated glucose levels activate the polyol pathway within nerve cells, leading to the accumulation of sorbitol and fructose. This increases oxidative stress, disrupts normal nerve...
