Paraffin Film Use

Paraffin film use refers to applying a flexible, moldable laboratory sealing film to close containers and protect their contents from air exchange, moisture loss, and contamination. The film conforms to vessel rims when stretched and pressed into place, creating a water-resistant barrier that can be removed without specialized tools. In neuroscience laboratories, researchers use it to seal culture plates, sample tubes, reagent bottles, and tissue-processing containers during cell culture, molecular assays, and specimen storage. By helping maintain stable volumes and limit environmental exposure, paraffin film supports reliable handling of sensitive biological materials and improves consistency across experimental workflows.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

Identification of mechanisms underlying muscle damage is crucial. Here we present the histological technique for preparing paraffin-embedded and frozen sections of Drosophila thoracic muscles. This allows analysis of muscle morphology and localization of protein and other muscle cell components.

Embedding Adult Drosophila Heads in Paraffin: Preparing Tissue for Histology

2023

This video describes how to embed Drosophila heads in paraffin using the collar method, a technique that prepares fly heads for serial sectioning. Paraffin sections are used for histological examinations of the brain's anatomy and for the assessment of neurodegeneration. The featured protocol demonstrates how multiple flies can be processed in one preparation, thereby increasing time-efficiency and minimizing experimental artifacts.
