Postauricular Surgical Approach

The postauricular surgical approach is an operative route that uses an incision behind the external ear to reach structures of the temporal bone, middle and inner ear, or adjacent skull base. After reflecting the skin and soft tissues, the surgeon identifies anatomical landmarks and may remove or shape portions of the mastoid or temporal bone to create a controlled path while protecting the facial nerve, major vessels, and neural tissues. In neuroscience, this approach supports procedures involving hearing, balance, cranial nerves, and skull-base lesions, including access for otologic and neurotologic interventions. Its placement can provide broad exposure while keeping the incision relatively concealed.
