Saline Solution

Saline solution is a sterile mixture of sodium chloride and water, commonly formulated at 0.9% to approximate the osmotic conditions of body fluids. Its dissolved ions help maintain fluid balance and electrical conductivity while limiting the movement of water across cell membranes, making it compatible with many biological tissues. In neuroscience, saline is used to irrigate surgical sites, maintain exposed neural tissue, flush recording or injection equipment, and serve as a vehicle for selected experimental compounds. Its controlled composition supports reliable procedures while reducing cellular stress and preserving neural function during laboratory and clinical applications.

A Hypertonic Saline Injection Technique for Inducing Glaucoma in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates glaucoma induction in an anesthetized rat by injecting hypertonic saline into the episcleral vein. The saline enters the trabecular meshwork via Schlemm's canal, causing tissue scarring, which blocks aqueous humor outflow and raises intraocular pressure. The elevated pressure damages retinal ganglion cells, leading to glaucoma.

Embryonic stages are the most susceptible to xenobiotics. Although chemical toxicity depends on salinity, no method exists to test the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic organisms. Here, we describe a new and high-throughput method for determining the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic embryos.

Salinity Tolerance of Alishewanella Species Isolated from Seawall Muddy Water

Begin with a culture of Alishewanella, a Gram-negative, salt-tolerant bacterium.Next, streak the culture onto agar plates containing increasing concentrations of sodium chloride to simulate varying levels of saline stress.Overlay each plate with a layer of unsolidified medium to prevent oxygen diffusion and maintain the culture in an oxygen-limited environment.Seal and incubate the plates at an optimum temperature to support bacterial growth.During incubation, the bacterium exhibits varying...

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

2023

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

Solution Formation

There is no one solvent that can dissolve every type of solute. Some substances that readily dissolve in a certain solvent might be insoluble in a different solvent. A simple way to predict which substances dissolve in which solvent is the phrase "like dissolves like". This means that polar substances, such as salt and sugar, dissolve in a polar substance like water. In contrast, non-polar substances are more soluble in non-polar solvents such as carbon tetrachloride. This selective solubility...
