Therapeutic Testing

Therapeutic testing is the systematic evaluation of treatments to determine their safety, biological activity, and potential clinical benefit. In neuroscience, researchers test candidate drugs, biologics, devices, or behavioral interventions through complementary stages that may include cellular assays, animal models, pharmacokinetic and dose-response studies, biomarker analysis, and controlled clinical trials. These approaches reveal how an intervention affects neural circuits, synaptic function, behavior, or disease-related symptoms while identifying toxicity and treatment limitations. Rigorous therapeutic testing supports evidence-based decisions about which candidates advance toward clinical use and helps refine interventions for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

2011

A method for reliably grafting luciferase-tagged human malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor cells into the sciatic nerve of immunodeficient mice is described. The use of bioluminescence imaging to demonstrate proper establishment of tumor grafts and criteria for random segregation of animals into study groups are also discussed.

Therapeutic Index

2025

The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...

Tests on Wood

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Wood is a ubiquitous material that has been used in construction from the earliest times. Wood is a renewable, sustainable material with great aesthetic value. Today, there are probably more buildings constructed with wood than any other structural material. Many of these buildings are singlefamily residences, but many larger apartment buildings, as well as commercial and industrial buildings,...
