Shapiro-wilk Test

The Shapiro-Wilk test is a statistical method for assessing whether a dataset is consistent with a normal distribution, an assumption underlying many common analyses. It orders the observed values, compares them with the expected order statistics of a normal sample, and summarizes the agreement in the W statistic; the resulting p-value indicates whether the data provide evidence against normality. In neuroscience, researchers use the test to evaluate behavioral, electrophysiological, imaging, or other experimental measurements before selecting parametric methods such as t-tests and analysis of variance, or nonparametric alternatives when normality is not supported.

Combining plot analysis with trigonometric regression is a robust method for exploring complex, cyclical phenomena such as relapse onset timing in multiple sclerosis (MS). This method enabled unbiased characterisation of seasonal trends in relapse onset permitting novel inferences around the influence of seasonal variation, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and latitude.

Synchronization of bacterial cells is essential for studies of the bacterial cell cycle and development. Caulobacter crescentus is synchronizable through density centrifugation allowing a rapid and powerful tool for studies of the bacterial cell cycle. Here we provide a detailed protocol for the synchronization of Caulobacter cells.

The described RNA in situ hybridization protocol allows the detection of RNA in whole Drosophila embryos or dissected tissues. Using 96-well microtiter plates and tyramide signal amplification, transcripts can be detected at high resolution, sensitivity, and throughput, and at a relatively low cost.
