Pulmonary Vasodilation

Pulmonary vasodilation is the widening of blood vessels within the lungs, a process that lowers pulmonary vascular resistance and helps regulate blood flow through the pulmonary circulation. It occurs when pulmonary arterial smooth muscle relaxes, often through signaling pathways involving nitric oxide and cyclic guanosine monophosphate, prostacyclin and cyclic adenosine monophosphate, or reduced intracellular calcium. In pharmacology, vasodilators such as inhaled nitric oxide, prostacyclin analogs, and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors are used to treat pulmonary hypertension and improve right-heart function. Understanding these mechanisms supports targeted therapy while minimizing effects on systemic blood pressure and ventilation-perfusion matching.

We describe the isolation of cardiac extracellular matrix from C57Bl/6J control mice, tight-skin mice, and tight-skin mice treated with the IRF5 inhibitory peptide. We also describe the vasodilation studies on the isolated vessels from C57Bl/6J, tight-skin mice and tight-skin mice treated with the IRF5 inhibitory peptide.

Antihypertensive Drugs: Vasodilators

Vasodilators, primarily affecting the smooth muscles within arterial and venous walls, are commonly used for hypertension treatment. Medications such as minoxidil and hydralazine primarily target arteries and arterioles, while sodium nitroprusside acts on arterioles and venules. Minoxidil, functioning as a prodrug, is metabolized by hepatic sulfotransferase into its active form, minoxidil sulfate, after oral administration. This metabolite binds to the sulfonylurea receptor (SUR) component of...

The following protocol describes the methodology for the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic images used to obtain the Left Atrial Volume (LAV), Aorta (Ao) diameter, and Pulmonary Artery (PA) diameter in mice. This technique is a non-invasive, non-terminal procedure that allows assessment of the cardiopulmonary function.

Catheter-based Endovascular Angioplasty for Fibrosing Mediastinitis-associated Pulmonary Vein Stenosis

2025

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a life-threatening complication of fibrosing mediastinitis (FM), with a poor prognosis if not properly treated. Currently, catheter-based endovascular angioplasty is a promising therapeutic strategy for FM-associated PVS. This protocol primarily outlines a stepwise approach to the transcatheter procedure for FM-associated PVS.
