Airway Clearance Techniques

Airway clearance techniques are physical and pharmacological strategies that mobilize and remove mucus from the respiratory tract, helping maintain airway patency and support effective breathing. Methods such as controlled coughing, chest percussion, postural drainage, and positive expiratory pressure alter airflow, loosen secretions, and move mucus toward larger airways for expectoration; medications including bronchodilators and mucolytics may enhance these effects. In pharmacology and respiratory care, these approaches are used in conditions such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to improve ventilation, reduce secretion retention, and limit complications associated with obstructed airways.

Topical Airway Anesthesia for Awake-endoscopic Intubation Using the Spray-as-you-go Technique with High Oxygen Flow

The topical anesthetic lidocaine was atomized using a high oxygen flow through the working channel of a flexible intubating endoscope to achieve topical airway anesthesia for awake endotracheal intubation. We prefer this modified spray-as-you-go technique for endoscopic intubation to classical bolus application because of higher patient satisfaction and better compliance.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation V: Advanced Airway Management Techniques

2025

Airway management is essential in emergency and surgical medicine, ensuring ventilation and oxygenation in patients who cannot maintain their own airway. Clinicians use a range of techniques and devices to secure the airway, depending on the patient’s condition and the clinical context. Key methods include endotracheal intubation, rapid sequence intubation (RSI), supraglottic airway devices, and advanced visualization aids. In cases where these approaches fail, surgical airway interventions are...

Hepatic Drug Clearance: Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clearance

2025

Hepatic clearance refers to the volume of blood cleared of a drug by the liver per unit of time. It plays a crucial role in drug metabolism and elimination. While hepatic clearance is commonly estimated by subtracting renal clearance from total body clearance, other pathways, such as pulmonary or biliary clearance, may also contribute. However, these pathways are generally less significant than hepatic and renal clearance. Most drugs undergo restrictive clearance, which is proportional to the...

Co-culture Models of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms Grown on Live Human Airway Cells

This paper describes different methods of growing Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms on cultured human airway epithelial cells. These protocols can be adapted to study different aspects of biofilm formation, including visualization of the biofilm, staining of the biofilm, measuring the colony forming units (CFU) of the biofilm, and studying biofilm cytotoxicity.

Here we describe an effective method for studying dynamics of apoptotic cell clearance in vivo. This method employs live Drosophila embryos as a powerful model for monitoring phagocytosis of apoptotic cells using specific labeling of apoptotic cells and phagocytes.
