Carbon Substrate Analysis

Carbon substrate analysis is the characterization of carbon-based materials used as supporting surfaces, underlying layers, or functional components in physical systems. It examines properties such as composition, bonding, crystallinity, surface morphology, conductivity, and defects by measuring how electromagnetic radiation, particles, or electrical probes interact with the substrate and generate diagnostic signals. Techniques including spectroscopy, microscopy, diffraction, and transport measurements can reveal how processing conditions affect material performance. In physics, these analyses support the development and quality control of graphene devices, thin films, sensors, batteries, and other nanoscale technologies by linking substrate structure and surface properties to electronic, optical, and mechanical behavior.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

Stable carbon and oxygen isotope analysis of human and animal tooth enamel carbonate has been used as a proxy for individual diet and environmental reconstruction. Here, we provide a detailed description and visual documentation of bulk and sequential tooth enamel sampling as well as pretreatment of archaeological and paleontological samples.
