Mass Distribution

Mass distribution describes how mass is arranged throughout an object or system, and it determines how that system responds to forces and motion. In physics, density functions specify the mass in each region, allowing total mass, center of mass, and moments of inertia to be calculated by integrating over the object’s volume, area, or length. These quantities explain why objects with the same total mass can accelerate, balance, or rotate differently depending on their shape and internal structure. Understanding mass distribution supports analysis of rigid-body dynamics, stability, collisions, gravitational interactions, and the design of vehicles, machines, and experimental systems.

We describe the adaptation of optical projection tomography (OPT)1 to imaging in the near infrared spectrum, and the implementation of a number of computational tools. These protocols enable assessments of pancreatic β-cell mass (BCM) in larger specimens, increase the multichannel capacity of the technique and increase the quality of OPT data.

F Distribution

2023

The F distribution was named after Sir Ronald Fisher, an English statistician. The F statistic is a ratio (a fraction) with two sets of degrees of freedom; one for the numerator and one for the denominator. The F distribution is derived from the Student's t distribution. The values of the F distribution are squares of the corresponding values of the t distribution. One-Way ANOVA expands the t test for comparing more than two groups. The scope of that derivation is beyond the level of this...

Drug Distribution: Volume of Distribution

2023

The volume of distribution refers to the theoretical volume necessary to contain the entire amount of an administered drug at the same concentration observed in the blood plasma. The body's intracellular fluid compartment, which makes up two-thirds of the total body water, is contrasted with the extracellular fluid compartment—comprising plasma and interstitial fluid—that accounts for one-third. The volume of distribution can vary depending on the characteristics of the drug.

Tandem Mass Spectrometry

In tandem mass spectrometry a biomolecule of interest is isolated from a biological sample, and then fragmented into multiple subunits in order to help elucidate its composition and sequence. This is accomplished by having mass spectrometers in series. The first spectrometer ionizes a sample and filter ions of a specific mass to charge ratio. Filtered ions are then fragmented and passed to a second mass spectrometer where the fragments are analyzed. This video introduces the principles of...
