Stem Root Length

Stem root length is a quantitative measure of the longitudinal size of a plant’s stem and root, used to describe seedling architecture and growth. It is determined by measuring each organ from a defined base to its tip, with roots often requiring imaging or tracing when they branch or curve; biologically, elongation reflects coordinated cell division and expansion. In a physics-oriented analysis, these lengths provide measurable spatial variables for comparing growth, geometry, and responses to environmental conditions. The metric supports phenotyping, growth experiments, and models that relate plant structure to transport, stability, and resource acquisition.

Basic Plant Anatomy: Roots, Stems, and Leaves

The primary organs of vascular plants are roots, stems, and leaves, but these structures can be highly variable, adapted for the specific needs and environment of different plant species. Roots While roots are most often found underground, this is not universally the case. Aerial roots are any roots that emerge aboveground. Epiphytic plants, such as orchids, can live their entire lives without touching soil. Other types of aerial roots, such as those of the strangler fig or banyan, germinate...

Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurons and Differentiated Adipose-derived Stem Cells: An In Vitro Co-culture Model to Study Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

2015

Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are structures containing the sensory neurons of the peripheral nervous system. When dissociated, they can be co-cultured with SC-like adipose-derived stem cells (ASC), providing a valuable model to study in vitro nerve regeneration and myelination, mimicking the in vivo environment at the injury site.

Dorsal Root Ganglion Injection and Dorsal Root Crush Injury as a Model for Sensory Axon Regeneration

This protocol presents the use of a dorsal root ganglion (DRG) injection with a viral vector and a concurrent dorsal root crush injury in an adult rat as a model to study sensory axon regeneration. This model is suitable for investigating the use of gene therapy to promote sensory axon regeneration.

Source: Harris, S. L., et al. Monitoring Bacterial Colonization and Maintenance on Arabidopsis thaliana Roots in a Floating Hydroponic System. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a protocol for monitoring the colonization of root-associated bacteria on Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings grown in a soilless system. Following colonization, bacteria are dislodged by sonication, then diluted, plated, and incubated to form colonies that reflect bacterial attachment and viability.

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.
