Ability Praise

Ability praise is positive feedback that attributes a person’s success to an inherent quality, such as intelligence, talent, or natural ability. In psychology, it can shape motivation by directing attention toward stable traits rather than effort, strategies, or learning processes; after setbacks, this framing may encourage people to protect their self-image and avoid challenging tasks. Studying ability praise helps researchers distinguish how different forms of feedback influence achievement goals, persistence, risk-taking, and responses to failure. Comparing ability praise with process-focused praise is especially relevant in classrooms, parenting, coaching, and workplace development, where feedback can affect beliefs about competence and the willingness to improve.
