Prenatal Development

Prenatal development is the biological process through which a fertilized egg grows into a fetus before birth, laying foundations for later physical, cognitive, and behavioral development. It progresses through germinal, embryonic, and fetal stages as cells divide, specialize, and organize into tissues and organ systems, while genetic factors and the prenatal environment shape developmental patterns. In psychology, studying prenatal development helps explain how nutrition, stress, toxins, illness, and other maternal or environmental influences can affect brain formation and later outcomes. This knowledge informs developmental research, prenatal care, early intervention, and efforts to reduce preventable developmental risks.

Encephalopathy of prematurity encompasses the central nervous system abnormalities associated with injury from preterm birth. This report describes a clinically relevant rat model of in utero transient systemic hypoxia-ischemia and intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide administration (LPS) that mimics chorioamnionitis, and the related impact of infectious stimuli and placental underperfusion on CNS development.

2023

Successful breeding of the laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) is critical to the establishment and maintenance of a productive animal colony. Additionally, mouse embryos are frequently studied to answer questions about developmental processes. A wide variety of genetic tools now exist for regulating gene expression during mouse embryonic and postnatal development, which can help scientists to understand more about heritable diseases affecting human development. This video provides an introduction...
