Speech Production Assessment

Speech Production Assessment is a structured evaluation of how a person plans and produces spoken language, providing insight into communication abilities and possible speech-related difficulties. It typically combines observation with tasks such as repeating sounds or words, naming pictures, reading aloud, and producing connected speech to examine articulation, fluency, voice, rate, prosody, and intelligibility. In psychology, these assessments help characterize communication patterns, identify functional concerns, and track changes over time. Findings can support clinical decision-making, research on language and cognition, and evaluation of how neurological, developmental, or psychological conditions affect spoken communication.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.
