Toddler Gestures

Toddler gestures are purposeful body movements and facial or manual signals that young children use to communicate needs, intentions, and shared attention before and alongside spoken language. In psychology, they include deictic actions such as pointing or showing, as well as conventional gestures such as waving; these signals work by directing another person’s attention or representing an object, action, or social message. Observing how toddlers produce and interpret gestures helps researchers study early communication, social cognition, and language development. Gesture patterns also inform developmental assessment and support responsive interactions that strengthen emerging communication skills.

2023

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The key to a successful exam of a toddler or preschool-age child is building rapport and trust between them and the provider. Toddlers, in particular, may be wary of strangers and unwilling to cooperate with the physical exam, which is expected age-appropriate behavior. In order to provide good care and create a comfortable patient experience, clinicians need to tailor their interaction to the child's developmental stage.

Deictic gestures emerge around six months and include...

We describe the methods for continuous monitoring of the autonomic nervous system under resting and challenge conditions with 18 month old children. Results revealed that this protocol can produce meaningful physiological responses in both branches of the autonomic nervous system and elicit significant individual variability in patterns of responses.

The paper presents a comprehensive protocol for simultaneously recording hand-electromyography (EMG) and visual finger tracking during natural finger gesturing. The visual data is designed to serve as the ground truth for the development of accurate EMG-based computational models for finger gesture recognition.

Examining Gesture Production in the Presence of Communication Challenges

2024

Here, we present a protocol that manipulates interlocutor visibility to examine its impact on gesture production in interpersonal communication. This protocol is flexible to tasks implemented, gestures examined, and communication modality. It is ideal for populations with communication challenges, such as second language learners and individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
