Traumatic Memory

Traumatic memory refers to the ways highly distressing or life-threatening experiences are encoded, stored, and later remembered, making it an important topic in psychology and mental-health research. During intense stress, heightened arousal can influence attention and memory encoding; later, reminders may trigger vivid, involuntary recollections, physiological responses, or gaps and changes in how the event is organized and recalled. Studying traumatic memory helps researchers understand post-traumatic stress symptoms, assess how memories change during retrieval and reconsolidation, and evaluate interventions that support safer processing and more adaptive autobiographical memory.

Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual remembers mundane...

Here we present a protocol for a mouse-specific test of cognition that does not require swimming. This test can be used to successfully distinguish controlled cortical impact-induced traumatic brain injury mice from sham controls.

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...

The Real-World What-Where-When memory test is a novel episodic memory test, in which participants need to recall which objects have been hidden in which locations on which of two distinct occasions. It is easy to run and is sensitive to normal cognitive aging.
