Visual Proprioceptive Conflict

Visual proprioceptive conflict is a mismatch between what vision indicates about the position or movement of a body part and the information provided by proprioceptors in muscles, joints, and skin. The brain normally integrates these sensory signals to estimate the body’s location, but conflicting inputs can produce altered limb-position judgments, perceived movement, or changes in body ownership as sensory weighting and integration are recalibrated. In psychology, this phenomenon helps researchers investigate multisensory processing, body representation, motor control, and perceptual adaptation, with applications in studying virtual embodiment, rehabilitation, spatial orientation, and neurological conditions that disrupt bodily awareness.
