Voluntary Grasping

Voluntary grasping is the intentional act of reaching for and securing an object, requiring coordinated perception, decision-making, and hand movement. The process begins when visual information about an object’s location, size, and shape guides motor planning; the nervous system then coordinates hand transport with finger shaping and adjusts force when contact occurs. In psychology, studying voluntary grasping helps researchers examine sensorimotor integration, attention, action selection, and the relationship between perceived object properties and behavior. Findings inform research on motor development, neurological impairment, human-computer interaction, and rehabilitation.

When we grasp an object, multiple regions of the fingers and hand typically make contact with the object's surface. Reconstructing such contact regions is challenging. Here, we present a method for approximately estimating the contact regions by combining marker-based motion capture with existing deep learning-based hand mesh reconstruction.

2018

This protocol describes how to use frame-by-frame video analysis to quantify idiosyncratic reach-to-grasp movements in humans. A comparative analysis of reaching in sighted versus unsighted healthy adults is used to demonstrate the technique, but the method can also be applied to the study of developmental and clinical populations.

Tracking Individual Running Metrics in Mice Using a Voluntary Wheel Running Protocol that Minimizes Social Isolation
