Fiber Polarization Controller

A fiber polarization controller is an optical device that changes and stabilizes the polarization state of light traveling through an optical fiber, a capability essential because polarization affects signal transmission, interference, and measurement reliability. It works by introducing controlled birefringence, often with adjustable wave plates, fiber squeezers, or electro-optic elements, which changes the relative phase and orientation of orthogonal electric-field components to produce a desired state. In statistics, controlled polarization enables repeatable experiments and systematic analysis of polarization-dependent measurements, including variability, noise, and drift. The technique supports fiber-optic communications, interferometry, sensing, and calibration by improving data consistency and helping distinguish physical effects from measurement artifacts.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

Group Polarization

2020

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition. The phenomenon of group polarization explains many actions taken by groups that would not...
