In der Arbeit werden Methoden für die Larvenkultur der Schnecke Crepidula fornicata in einem kleinvolumigen System im Labormaßstab und in einem Umgebungs-Meerwasser-Mesokosmen-System vorgestellt, die im Feld eingesetzt werden können.
Ich interessiere mich dafür, wie die Entwicklung von Meereslarven von mehreren Umweltfaktoren und Stressoren beeinflusst wird und wie das Nervensystem der Larven Informationen aus der Umwelt integriert, um die Ansiedlung von Larven, die Metamorphose zu benthischen Jungtieren und die Rekrutierung in erwachsene Populationen zu regulieren. Die Larven einiger mariner Arten wie der Pantoffelschnecke, Crepidula Fornicata, sind recht widerstandsfähig gegen Ozeanversauerung, aber es gibt wichtige Wechselwirkungen zwischen Versauerung und anderen Faktoren, wie Ernährung und Salzgehalt. Wir wissen nicht sehr viel darüber, wie Larven in der Natur wachsen, sich entwickeln und verhalten.
Beobachtungen des Feldmesokosmos können einige dieser Lücken füllen und Hypothesen vorschlagen, die mit Labormanipulationen überprüft werden können. Wir können beginnen, auf neurobehavioraler, entwicklungsbezogener und transkriptioneller Ebene zu fragen, wie Larven mit Stressoren umgehen, die in produktiven Küstenumgebungen, die besonders anfällig für menschliche Einflüsse sind, auf kurzen Zeitskalen variieren.
