Un pigmento en particular, la clorofila, es el más abundante en verano. Hay otros pigmentos en las hojas, como los carotenoides, que reflejan la luz roja y amarilla. En otoño las hojas dejan de reponer sus pigmentos. Cada pigmento tiene un valor Rf único y podemos identificar fácilmente los pigmentos comparando los valores calculados con los estándares. La fotosíntesis, el proceso por el cual las plantas convierten el dióxido de carbono, el agua y la energía luminosa en energía química y oxígeno, se lleva a cabo principalmente en las hojas de una planta, y la clorofila juega un papel fundamental en este proceso. Los cloroplastos contienen docenas de moléculas de clorofila, cada una de las cuales realiza una tarea específica e interactúa de formas complejas. En última instancia, la energía de la luz hace que las moléculas de clorofila cedan electrones que se utilizan en otros procesos metabólicos. Por lo tanto, la clorofila necesita un suministro continuo de electrones para reemplazar los que pierde. Estos electrones de reemplazo provienen de la división de las moléculas de agua en protones, electrones y moléculas de oxígeno. <h4>Autótrofos</h4>

En las células eucariotas, la fotosíntesis tiene lugar en un orgánulo llamado cloroplasto, que aparece de color verde debido a su alto contenido en el pigmento clorofila. Los pigmentos son moléculas que absorben la luz a ciertas longitudes de onda. La luz que no es absorbida por un pigmento se refleja como luz visible que se puede observar como el color del pigmento. Las plantas producen múltiples pigmentos con diversas funciones que absorben la luz del sol en diferentes longitudes de onda. Por ejemplo, la clorofila absorbe la luz en longitudes de onda rojas y azules, mientras que refleja longitudes de onda que corresponden al verde. Algunos otros pigmentos, como los carotenoides, las antocianinas y las betalaínas, suelen reflejar la luz en longitudes de onda de baja energía entre 600 y 800 nm y, por lo tanto, aparecen de color amarillo a rojo. En las regiones templadas, la disminución de la clorofila en otoño revela estos pigmentos cuando las hojas cambian de color a rojos, amarillos y naranjas.

<h4>Cloroplastos</h4>

La clorofila es el pigmento principal de los cloroplastos utilizados en la fotosíntesis, mientras que otros pigmentos ayudan a canalizar la energía luminosa a las clorofilas o protegen la célula contra el daño de la luz. La fotosíntesis consta de dos vías, que se conocen como reacciones dependientes de la luz e independientes de la luz y ocurren en lugares distintos dentro de los cloroplastos. Estos orgánulos contienen tres membranas: una membrana externa, una membrana interna y la membrana tilacoide más interna, que forma pliegues largos en forma de disco dentro del cloroplasto. El espacio lleno de líquido entre las membranas interna y tilacoide se llama estroma. Las reacciones dependientes de la luz comienzan cuando la energía de la luz solar excita los electrones de los pigmentos de clorofila que están incrustados dentro de la membrana tilacoide. Estos electrones de alta energía pasan de una molécula portadora de electrones a otra dentro de la membrana tilacoide, conocida colectivamente como cadena de transporte de electrones. Cada transferencia dentro de la cadena de transporte de electrones lleva al electrón a un estado de energía más bajo, por lo tanto, libera energía. Parte de esta energía se aprovecha para sintetizar moléculas pequeñas y ricas en energía, como el trifosfato de adenosina (ATP) y el fosfato de dinucleótido de nicotinamida y adenina (NADPH). El electrón perdido de la clorofila se reemplaza a través de la hidrólisis (lo que significa la división del agua), cuando los átomos de hidrógeno y oxígeno se separan. Los átomos de hidrógeno generados por hidrólisis donan sus electrones a la clorofila, mientras que las moléculas de oxígeno se liberan a la atmósfera. El flujo de electrones a través de la hidrólisis permite que los pigmentos de clorofila absorban continuamente la energía de la luz excitando repetidamente nuevos electrones y los pasen por la cadena de transporte de electrones.

Las reacciones independientes de la luz tienen lugar en el estroma. Este proceso utiliza la energía de la luz indirectamente utilizando la energía de las moléculas de ATP y NADPH generada por las reacciones dependientes de la luz. Durante esta vía, el dióxido de carbono (CO2) se utiliza para construir un azúcar de tres carbonos, que luego se puede convertir en glucosa u otras biomoléculas. Este proceso también se conoce como fijación de carbono o secuestro de carbono, porque el carbono se secuestra de la atmósfera y se fija en biomoléculas.

<h4>La fotosíntesis y el medio ambiente</h4>

El secuestro de carbono durante la fotosíntesis es un paso importante del ciclo del carbono, en el que elCO2 fluye de un depósito a otro a un ritmo relativamente constante. Los cambios en el caudal deCO2 pueden cambiar el equilibrio del mismo entre los embalses. Más importante aún, dado que elCO2 es un gas de efecto invernadero, los aumentos en su concentración atmosférica contribuyen al aumento de las temperaturas. La mayor parte de esteCO2 se emite mediante la quema de combustibles fósiles, devolviendo así a la atmósfera el dióxido de carbono que fue secuestrado por la fotosíntesis hace cientos de millones de años a la atmósfera a un ritmo sin precedentes. Por lo tanto, los bosques y las algas oceánicas son cada vez más imprescindibles para enfriar la tierra al reducir el aumento de los niveles deCO2 1. Esta es una de las muchas razones por las que la deforestación es una preocupación seria en un clima cambiante.

Al igual que las plantas utilizan la fotosíntesis para capturar la energía luminosa en biomoléculas, los investigadores están investigando la fotosíntesis artificial para crear biocombustibles neutros en carbono como alternativa a los combustibles fósiles. Al igual que los paneles solares, los métodos de fotosíntesis artificial obtienen energía del sol y la almacenan como energía química, parte de la cual se puede almacenar durante largos períodos de tiempo, en lugar de convertirla directamenteen electricidad. Los científicos también han sido capaces de producir azúcares simples y ácido láctico utilizando bacterias fotosintéticas3. Este enfoque tiene amplias aplicaciones en la fabricación de biomoléculas, biocombustibles e incluso plásticos biodegradables con pocas o ninguna emisión nociva. Además, este enfoque se puede utilizar para eliminar el exceso deCO2 de la atmósfera. Un concepto similar se está aplicando en el campo de la medicina, donde las bacterias fotosintéticas se están utilizando para producir sustancias fisiológicamente activas y medicamentos, algunos de los cuales se han aplicado al diagnóstico y tratamiento del cáncer4. Las investigaciones futuras pueden aumentar la eficiencia de la producción de moléculas sostenibles y neutras en carbono, al tiempo que remedian los efectos del aumento de los niveles atmosféricos deCO2.

photosynthesis: light, sugars, and carbon

Photosynthesis turns sunlight into chemical energy in the form of glucose. This process powers most life on Earth by helping autotrophs, or primary producers, make food. The glucose they make can provide quick energy or be stored as starch for later use. Consumers depend on these producers for energy.

Photosynthesis happens in many kinds of organisms. Cyanobacteria, some protists such as algae, and plants can all carry out this process. In eukaryotic cells, it takes place in the chloroplast. Chloroplasts look green because they contain chlorophyll, a pigment that absorbs light at specific wavelengths.

Plants use several pigments to capture light. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light and reflects green light. Other pigments, including carotenoids, anthocyanins, and betalains, absorb or reflect different wavelengths and often appear yellow to red. In autumn, when chlorophyll levels drop in temperate regions, these pigments become visible and leaves change color.

Photosynthesis has two main stages: light-dependent reactions and light-independent reactions. These stages happen in different parts of the chloroplast. The chloroplast has an outer membrane, an inner membrane, and an inner thylakoid membrane that forms disc-like folds. The space between the inner membrane and thylakoids is the stroma.

The light-dependent reactions begin in the thylakoid membrane when sunlight excites electrons in chlorophyll. Those electrons move through an electron transport chain, dropping to lower energy levels and releasing energy. The cell uses that energy to make ATP and NADPH. Water splitting, also called hydrolysis, replaces the lost electrons in chlorophyll. This process releases oxygen into the atmosphere and helps keep the flow of electrons going.

The light-independent reactions take place in the stroma. They use ATP and NADPH from the first stage to build a three-carbon sugar from carbon dioxide. That sugar can then be turned into glucose or other biomolecules. This is also called carbon fixation or carbon sequestration because carbon is pulled from the atmosphere and stored in living molecules.

Photosynthesis plays a major role in the carbon cycle. Carbon dioxide moves between reservoirs at a steady pace, but changes in that flow can upset the balance. Because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, more of it in the atmosphere can raise temperatures. Much of the extra carbon dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels, which returns ancient carbon to the air very quickly.

Forests and ocean algae help lower carbon dioxide levels, so deforestation is a serious concern in a changing climate. Scientists are also studying artificial photosynthesis as a way to make carbon-neutral biofuels. Like solar panels, these methods take energy from the sun and store it as chemical energy instead of electricity. Researchers have also used photosynthetic bacteria to make simple sugars, lactic acid, biodegradable plastics, and even medically useful compounds, including substances studied for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
