Extinction

¿Qué tienen en común los dinosaurios, los tigres de Tasmania y los estorninos abubillos? La respuesta es el tema del laboratorio de hoy, la extinción. La extinción ocurre cuando una especie no puede sobrevivir en su entorno para reproducirse y no puede pasar a uno nuevo. Se pensaba que los mamuts lanudos, por ejemplo, habían muerto como resultado del cambio climático, lo que hacía que su hábitat y el resto del planeta fueran demasiado cálidos. La extinción ha ocurrido desde que hay vida en la tierra. De hecho, se estima que el 99% de todas las especies que han existido se han extinguido. 
La mayoría de estas extinciones ocurrieron con el tiempo debido a cambios ambientales como nuestro mamut lanudo. Pero otros factores, como la competencia por los recursos con otras especies y la incapacidad de evitar la depredación, también pueden llevar a una especie a la extinción. Tomemos estos peces, por ejemplo. Ambas especies comparten un hábitat, pero el pez verde es mejor para evadir a los depredadores, lo que hace que su supervivencia sea más probable y, finalmente, extinga al pez naranja. Las extinciones que ocurren a nivel global se denominan extinciones masivas y generalmente son causadas por eventos catastróficos importantes como impactos desde el espacio, actividad volcánica significativa y otros fenómenos que causan el cambio climático global. Durante estos eventos, las altas tasas de extinción superan las tasas de nueva especiación, lo que resulta en una pérdida global de especies. 
La extinción masiva más conocida es la extinción del Cretácico-Paleógeno o K-Pg, famosa por acabar con el reinado de los dinosaurios. Esta extinción se puede ver incluso en las capas o estratos rocosos de la tierra, donde vemos una pérdida abrupta de especies del registro fósil hace unos 66 millones de años, que también coincide con una capa de sedimento única que contiene iridio, un metal que no se encuentra a menudo en la corteza terrestre. Sin embargo, el iridio está presente en grandes cantidades en los asteroides, lo que da a los científicos una pista sobre la causa de la extinción. El impacto en la península de Yucatán en México creó el cráter Chicxulub de 180 kilómetros de ancho y desencadenó una serie de eventos catastróficos que alterarían la tierra para siempre. En primer lugar, las tormentas de fuego habrían devastado el continente norteamericano creando una enorme nube de humo y polvo. Los escombros expulsados por la colisión habrían quedado atrapados en la atmósfera superior causando un efecto de manta, que atrapó cantidades mortales de radiación infrarroja en la atmósfera. Las erupciones volcánicas y la inestabilidad geológica generalizada que siguió al impacto alimentaron aún más la asfixia de la tierra y, a medida que el hollín, el humo y las cenizas volcánicas bloquearon el sol, muchas plantas ya no pudieron realizar la fotosíntesis y, por lo tanto, perecieron. Sin alimento, los herbívoros fueron los siguientes en extinguirse, seguidos de cerca por los depredadores. Las emisiones volcánicas y el smog resultante causaron lluvia ácida que acidificó los océanos, acabando con muchas especies acuáticas. Pronto, la atmósfera ácida y la densa niebla que bloqueaba el calor del sol provocaron una congelación profunda con temperaturas globales que cayeron por debajo de cero durante varios años. <h4>La historia de la vida en la Tierra</h4>
Los fósiles de organismos que eran diferentes de todo lo que vive hoy en día se habían documentado ya en el siglo XVII, pero no fue hasta principios del siglo XIX que los científicos comenzaron a reconocer que las capas sucesivas de rocas portadoras de fósiles eran como páginas sucesivas en la historia de la vida en la Tierra. Aunque este reconocimiento dio lugar al nacimiento del campo de la paleontología, la idea de la extinción global completa de una especie aún no había sido plenamente aceptada. En ese momento, seguía siendo viable argumentar que nuestro conocimiento del mundo era limitado, por lo tanto, los científicos consideraron la posibilidad de que los organismos conocidos solo por fósiles aún pudieran vivir en alguna parte inexplorada de la tierra.
Cuando Charles Darwin publicó "El origen de las especies" en 1859, el concepto de la extinción de las especies era cada vez más aceptado, pero la causa de las extinciones seguía siendo un misterio. La extinción continua era parte integral de la teoría de la selección natural de Darwin, ya que la veía como un resultado lógico de la evolución de especies que eran más competitivas, mejores depredadores o más aptas que sus antepasados de otra manera. Por lo tanto, los antepasados se habían extinguido para ser reemplazados por sus descendientes superiores. La única ilustración que Darwin incluyó en su libro es de un árbol filogenético primitivo, al que se refirió en múltiples ocasiones para apoyar su argumento de que la extinción es un subproducto de la evolución.
Todo organismo vivo llega a la existencia, prevalece durante algún período de tiempo y finalmente perece. Lo mismo ocurre con las especies, por lo que el destino final de todas las especies es la extinción. Una especie se extingue cuando ya no puede sobrevivir y reproducirse en su entorno y no puede pasar a uno nuevo. Se estima que más del 99% de todas las especies que han existido se han extinguido, y la mayoría tiene una "esperanza de vida" promedio de 1 a 10 millones de años. La extinción puede ser gradual debido a cambios ambientales lentos o a la incapacidad de competir con una especie emergente, o puede ser repentina debido a eventos catastróficos, destrucción del hábitat, contaminación o caza excesiva.
<h4>Extinción a gran escala</h4>
Las extinciones masivas, o eventos de extinción, son grandes disminuciones mundiales de la biodiversidad, cuando las tasas de extinción superan las tasas de especiación. Las extinciones masivas generalmente son causadas por eventos geológicos o astronómicos, como erupciones volcánicas, cambios en la composición atmosférica, aumento o disminución del nivel del mar, enfriamiento y calentamiento global e impactos de asteroides.
Se han identificado cinco grandes eventos de extinción masiva y se han utilizado para subdividir el tiempo geológico en distintas eras o períodos que están anidados dentro de eras. Cuando varias especies se extinguen muy abruptamente, desaparecen del registro fósil, proporcionando una métrica para el final de una subdivisión dada de la escala de tiempo geológico y el comienzo de un nuevo período de tiempo.
<h4>La extinción del Pérmico-Triásico</h4>
La mayor extinción masiva, la extinción del Pérmico-Triásico, también conocida como "La Gran Mortandad" o el "desastre del Pérmico-Triásico" tuvo lugar hace aproximadamente 252 millones de años al final del período Pérmico, llevando a más del 90% de todas las especies a la extinción. Otra extinción masiva bien conocida es la extinción del Cretácico-Paleógeno (K-Pg) o Cretácico-Terciario (KT), que ocurrió hace aproximadamente 66 millones de años2. Si bien la causa de la extinción de K-Pg ha sido ampliamente debatida, el consenso se ha establecido en un impacto de asteroide en la península de Yucatán en México como la causa más importante del evento. Este impacto masivo provocó inestabilidad geológica en ciertas áreas, lo que provocó terremotos, cantidades significativas de actividad volcánica, así como un aumento dramático del nivel del mar. Además, también desencadenó incendios masivos, que a su vez llenaron el aire con una gruesa capa de ceniza, humo y polvo, bloqueando el sol y provocando un período de enfriamiento global.
El momento del impacto del asteroide sigue a las erupciones volcánicas masivas que causaron la formación de las Trampas del Decán, en el centro-oeste de la India. Estas erupciones ocurrieron en un intervalo de hasta 30.000 años y comenzaron antes del impacto del asteroide. Causaron la formación volcánica más grande de la tierra que cubre un área de más de 200,000 millas cuadradas. Estas erupciones también habrían causado un cambio climático sostenido y, por lo tanto, se consideran una causa alternativa al impacto del asteroide o un aumento de las alteraciones ambientales que siguieron al impacto.
<h4>Pérdida global de especies</h4>
El evento K-Pg es más famoso por la extinción de los dinosaurios; sin embargo, los dinosaurios no fueron los únicos taxones afectados: aproximadamente el 75% de todas las especies se extinguieron durante este evento. Sin embargo, no todos los taxones se vieron afectados por igual, y algunos se beneficiaron posteriormente de la apertura de nichos previamente ocupados2. Los mamíferos y los anfibios formaban parte de este último grupo. Si bien la diversidad se perdió durante la extinción, estos dos taxones perdieron diversidad a un ritmo menor que muchos otros taxones y ambos grupos se sometieron a una radiación adaptativa tras la desaparición de otros grandes tetrápodos, como los arcosaurios. De los arcosaurios, solo sobrevivieron los linajes que dieron lugar a las aves y los cocodrilos. Por lo tanto, los dinosaurios no aviares no se observan más allá del límite K-Pg en el registro fósil, y se cree que se extinguieron rápida y completamente debido a su falta de capacidad para refugiarse y su dependencia de las dietas carnívoras. El registro fósil de insectos muestra grandes oscilaciones al comienzo del Paleógeno. Es posible que esta variación se deba a la imperfección del registro fósil y a que algunas etapas eran más propensas a preservar fósiles que otras. También se sabe, sin embargo, que los insectos experimentaron tendencias similares a las de otros taxones, disminuyendo inmediatamente después de la extinción de K-Pg y luego repuntando. También se puede observar un punto alto en el Máximo Térmico para este taxón. Los Osteichthyes, o peces óseos, también experimentan un patrón irregular de diversidad. Los fósiles marinos de aguas profundas, en particular, son difíciles de encontrar, lo que podría contribuir a esta irregularidad, sin embargo, vale la pena señalar que la mayor diversidad de peces óseos se encuentra en el Máximo Térmico. Se cree que los mares poco profundos experimentaron los peores efectos durante el evento de extinción debido al mayor impacto del aumento del nivel del mar y la reducción de la fotosíntesis en comparación con otros hábitats marinos. Los moluscos experimentaron un enorme declive después de la extinción de K-Pg, y estos números no se recuperan al final del Paleógeno. Echinodermata y Crustacea experimentan niveles similares de disminución, sin embargo, estos números también pueden verse afectados por la falta de estructuras fosilizantes en ambos grupos.
Algunos científicos han sugerido que entramos en una nueva era geológica conocida como Antropoceno, junto con la "Sexta Extinción Masiva". Esta sugerencia se basa en los cambios globales, así como en la alta tasa de extinción global como resultado de la actividad humana, incluida la caza excesiva, la contaminación, la destrucción del hábitat, las especies invasoras y el cambio climático. Debido a que la extinción actual es causada por la actividad humana, es diferente a las otras extinciones masivas, que en gran medida han sido el resultado de procesos astronómicos y geológicos. La tasa actual de extinción es hasta 100 veces mayor de lo que se espera sin la influencia humana y probablemente sea mayor, considerando especies que aún no han sido descubiertas. Teniendo en cuenta que la tasa de extinción del Antropoceno es igual o mayor que las asociadas con los eventos de extinción masiva anteriores, se requiere una acción rápida para revertir las enormes pérdidas para las poblaciones vulnerables.

mass extinction and the fossil record

Mass extinction is a major loss of species, and the fossil record shows how these events changed life on Earth. Fossils from different rock layers helped scientists see that life has a long history. In the early 19th century, that idea helped launch paleontology, the study of fossils and ancient life.

At first, many scientists did not fully accept that a species could disappear forever. They thought unknown organisms seen only in fossils might still live in unexplored places on Earth. By 1859, when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, extinction was becoming more accepted, but its cause was still unclear. Darwin linked extinction to natural selection, where better-adapted species outcompete older ones and replace them over time.

A species goes extinct when it can no longer survive and reproduce in its environment and cannot move to a new one. Over 99% of species that have ever existed are estimated to have gone extinct. Most species last about 1 to 10 million years. Extinction can happen slowly because of environmental change or competition, or suddenly because of disasters, habitat loss, pollution, or overhunting.

Mass extinctions, also called extinction events, are global drops in biodiversity. They happen when extinction rates become higher than speciation rates, which is the rate at which new species form. These events are often linked to volcanic eruptions, changes in air composition, sea level changes, global cooling or warming, and asteroid impacts. Five major mass extinctions are recognized, and they help divide geologic time into eras and periods. When many species disappear at once, they also leave a clear signal in the fossil record.

The largest known mass extinction was the Permian-Triassic extinction, also called the Great Dying, about 252 million years ago. It happened at the end of the Permian Period and eliminated over 90% of species. Another famous event was the Cretaceous-Palaeogene, or K-Pg, extinction about 66 million years ago. Scientists now agree that a huge asteroid impact on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico was a major cause. The impact likely triggered earthquakes, major volcanic activity, and sea level rise, and it also caused fires that filled the air with ash, smoke, and dust. That blocked sunlight and led to global cooling.

The K-Pg event also came after the Deccan Traps eruptions in west-central India. These eruptions lasted as long as 30,000 years and formed the largest volcanic feature on Earth, covering more than 200,000 square miles. They likely added to long-term climate change. For that reason, some scientists view the eruptions as an alternative cause or as an added stress that worked with the asteroid impact.

The K-Pg extinction is best known for the loss of dinosaurs, but they were not the only group affected. About 75% of all species went extinct. Some groups later benefited when empty ecological niches opened up. Mammals and amphibians lost diversity at a lower rate than many other groups and then diversified after large tetrapods such as archosaurs declined. Among the archosaurs, only the lineages leading to birds and crocodiles survived. Non-avian dinosaurs do not appear above the K-Pg boundary in the fossil record, and they are thought to have died out quickly because they could not shelter well and depended on carnivorous diets.

Other groups also show the effect of the K-Pg event in different ways. Insects dropped after the extinction and then rebounded, although changes in fossil preservation may affect the pattern. Bony fish, or Osteichthyes, show an uneven diversity record, especially because deep-water fossils are hard to find. Shallow seas may have been hit hardest because sea level rise and reduced photosynthesis affected them more. Molluscs declined greatly and did not recover by the end of the Paleogene. Echinoderms and crustaceans also declined, although their fossil record may be affected by the lack of hard parts that fossilize easily.

Some scientists think Earth may now be entering the Anthropocene, along with a possible Sixth Mass Extinction. This idea is based on rapid global change and high extinction rates caused by human activity. Overhunting, pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, and climate change all contribute. The current extinction rate may be up to 100 times higher than expected without human influence, and it could be even higher because many species have not yet been discovered. Because this rate is comparable to earlier mass extinctions, rapid action is needed to protect vulnerable populations.
