Community Diversity

Un ecosistema es una comunidad de componentes vivos y no vivos que interactúan en un área. Puede ser tan grande como la tierra misma o un bosque lleno de plantas y animales, o tan pequeño como un estómago con su variedad de habitantes microbianos. La salud de los ecosistemas se puede medir de diferentes maneras, pero un buen indicador es la biodiversidad, una medida de la variedad de especies biológicas en un ecosistema. 

Podemos evaluar la biodiversidad utilizando una medida llamada Índice de Shannon-Wiener, propuesto por Claude Shannon y Norbert Wiener en la década de 1940. El índice de Shannon-Wiener es una medida sin unidades, calculada como H. El índice utiliza dos variables: la riqueza de especies, o el número de especies presentes, indicado por K, y la uniformidad de las especies, o la proporción de cada especie, indicada por PI. La riqueza de especies es el número de especies únicas en un ecosistema. Este ejemplo tiene siete. La uniformidad de las especies mide cómo se distribuyen las especies en un ecosistema. Esto significa que un ecosistema en el que las diferentes especies tienen números similares es más parejo que uno en el que una o dos especies representan la mayoría de los organismos, como este, relativamente invadido por liebres. 

Ahora que sabemos qué medir, aprendamos a medir la biodiversidad. Dado que los ecosistemas pueden ser enormes, los ecologistas tuvieron que encontrar formas de muestrear grandes áreas al azar rápidamente. El más simple de ellos es el cuadrante, que es un marco de tamaño fijo, generalmente colocado al azar dentro de un sitio de muestreo. Los científicos inspeccionan el área dentro del cuadrante, registrando la riqueza de especies y también su uniformidad. Usando estas pequeñas ventanas colocadas en múltiples puntos sobre un ecosistema, pueden extrapolar sus hallazgos para dar estimaciones de diversidad para toda el área de estudio. Pero aunque esta técnica permite una evaluación manejable de un área grande, no es perfecta. Esta limitación significa que algunas comunidades, especialmente las irregulares o no uniformes, se muestrean mejor con un enfoque más estructurado. Aquí, nuestra pradera bordea el bosque y, en realidad, está formada por diferentes parches de hábitat. Para cubrir esta comunidad de manera justa, podemos dividir el paisaje en hábitats principales y, lo que es más importante, hábitats de borde. A menudo, las áreas de borde tienen más biodiversidad porque especies de ambos tipos de hábitat pueden vivir allí. Pero esto podría pasarse por alto en el muestreo aleatorio tradicional. En cambio, para medir la biodiversidad en una comunidad como esta, una buena estrategia puede ser primero muestrear las áreas centrales al azar usando cuadrantes. Los datos recopilados se pueden utilizar para calcular el valor H para cada hábitat principal. <h4>Biodiversidad</h4>

El término "salud del ecosistema" es metafórico porque es difícil comparar la salud de ecosistemas muy diferentes y no existe un valor único que se pueda utilizar para cuantificar la salud de un ecosistema. Por ejemplo, los desiertos y los bosques tienen diversidades de especies muy diferentes, pero uno no es necesariamente más saludable que el otro. Por lo tanto, se han formulado múltiples métricas para representar la salud de un ecosistema, y su uso depende de los objetivos del estudio. Por lo tanto, la "salud del ecosistema" puede referirse al valor de un ecosistema para los seres humanos. Por ejemplo, el valor de los servicios ecosistémicos, como el secuestro de carbono por los árboles o la polinización por las abejas, se utiliza para cuantificar la salud de los ecosistemas. Otras métricas pueden medir el número de especies raras que se encuentran en un ecosistema, la resistencia de un ecosistema al fuego o algunas otras mediciones de factores bióticos y abióticos. Para los ecólogos, una medida de salud muy popular es la de la diversidad biológica, o "biodiversidad", que es una medida de la variedad de especies biológicas que se encuentran en un área y se puede calcular utilizando el índice de biodiversidad de Shannon-Wiener.

El Índice Shannon-Wiener requiere dos mediciones de una comunidad local: la riqueza de especies y la uniformidad. La riqueza de especies es el número total de especies distintas dentro de una comunidad local. Un área sin especies presentes, como un estacionamiento recién pavimentado, tendría un valor de riqueza de 0. Las selvas tropicales, conocidas por albergar algunas de las comunidades más diversas de la Tierra, tienen una riqueza de especies mucho mayor. Si bien tener muchas especies generalmente coincide con tener un ecosistema diverso y saludable, también se debe considerar la uniformidad. Por ejemplo, cuando una especie domina el área mientras que las otras son muy raras, la biodiversidad en esta área es menor que en un área con especies de igual abundancia. Por lo tanto, las áreas con muchas especies que son relativamente iguales en abundancia tienen los puntajes más altos de biodiversidad.

Shannon-Wiener no es la única medida de la biodiversidad y la salud de los ecosistemas. Por ejemplo, un índice popular, llamado índice EPT, se utiliza para determinar la calidad del agua en los sistemas fluviales mediante la asignación de valores de salubridad a organismos individuales. Más específicamente, este índice considera tres órdenes de invertebrados sensibles a los contaminantes que se encuentran en los ríos, Ephemeroptera (efímeras), Plecoptera (moscas de piedra) y Trichoptera (moscas caddis). La presencia de estas especies intolerantes a los contaminantes en un curso de agua se utiliza como indicación de la buena calidad del agua y se considera que el ecosistema en cuestión es saludable.

A menudo, las áreas ecológicamente relevantes son demasiado grandes para ser muestreadas en su totalidad. Para resolver este problema, los ecólogos muestrean múltiples parcelas más pequeñas en toda el área de estudio utilizando cuadrantes, que son pequeños marcos de un tamaño predeterminado colocados en puntos a lo largo del sitio de estudio, en los que un investigador identifica y registra todos los individuos de las especies de interés. Cuando se consideran suficientes muestras cuadráticas, los científicos pueden extrapolar para hacer estimaciones precisas de las comunidades ecológicas.

<h4>Impactos de los cambios ecológicos</h4>

La mayoría de los cambios ecológicos naturales ocurren en una escala de tiempo extendida. Además, los seres humanos siguen alterando los ecosistemas. Para evaluar los cambios a largo plazo en los ecosistemas, los científicos han establecido sitios de Investigación Ecológica a Largo Plazo (LTER). Uno de los LTER más antiguos es el Bosque Experimental Hubbard Brook ubicado en New Hampshire, Estados Unidos. Este sitio y otros han aumentado el conocimiento sobre los patrones de escala de los ecosistemas como resultado de la deforestación, los cambios en los regímenes hidrológicos y otras perturbaciones ecológicas a largo plazo1.

Cuando un cambio importante ocurre muy rápidamente, se denomina perturbación ecológica. Los incendios, huracanes e inundaciones son ejemplos de perturbaciones ecológicas. Las perturbaciones pueden alterar un ecosistema al eliminar nutrientes y cambiar la composición de la comunidad biológica. Después de una perturbación, las especies más resistentes y resilientes se ven favorecidas para la supervivencia. Una especie o comunidad resistente es aquella que puede sobrevivir a grandes perturbaciones con un mínimo de detrimentos y recuperarse rápidamente de una perturbación, como los dientes de león después de cortar el césped. El muestreo de un sitio durante muchos años antes y después de las perturbaciones es inviable, pero la comparación de diferentes áreas con diferentes regímenes de perturbación ofrece una solución parcial a este problema.

Los hábitats perturbados suelen ser irregulares; por lo tanto, el uso de cuadrantes colocados al azar podría resultar en una representación insuficiente de las especies y estimaciones incorrectas de la biodiversidad. Por este motivo, es fundamental tener en cuenta el entorno y algunas de las características del hábitat que se está estudiando. Esto se logra en la ecología del paisaje mediante el estudio de los hábitats centrales y de borde. Un hábitat central se encuentra en el centro de un parche, rodeado por el mismo tipo de hábitat. Por el contrario, un hábitat de borde, también conocido como hábitat de límite, limita con un tipo de hábitat diferente. Los hábitats de borde, como donde un hábitat forestal se encuentra con un hábitat de pradera, pueden haber aumentado la biodiversidad porque se pueden encontrar en ellos especies de ambos tipos de hábitat. Tales diferencias en la biodiversidad en los bordes de los hábitats se denominan efectos de borde. Para evaluar estas áreas de transición, los ecólogos utilizan caminos a lo largo de los hábitats, llamados transectos, y registran la biodiversidad de pequeños sitios de muestreo a intervalos establecidos a lo largo del camino. Sin embargo, no todos los hábitats tendrán efectos de borde y, a veces, las especies de borde son invasoras y pueden crecer en una gama más amplia de hábitats, por lo que no son indicativos de un ecosistema "saludable".

Además de las medidas de especies, los científicos también pueden tomar medidas de los componentes químicos de un ecosistema para evaluar su salud. Por ejemplo, pueden comprobar la contaminación o examinar la calidad del suelo midiendo los nutrientes presentes. A medida que las poblaciones humanas continúan creciendo y alterando los ecosistemas en todo el mundo, los científicos y los ciudadanos preocupados trabajan para conservar y preservar los ecosistemas amenazados. Una forma de restaurar ecosistemas muy alterados es a través de la biorremediación, que implica la liberación de organismos biológicos, generalmente microorganismos, para descomponer los contaminantes y restaurar los rasgos favorables de un ecosistema3. Un ejemplo de esto es la liberación de microorganismos en las aguas residuales para descomponer la contaminación y restaurar el agua a una condición habitable para los peces4. Por lo tanto, las formas ingeniosas de restaurar los ecosistemas serán cada vez más importantes para remediar los efectos humanos en los ecosistemas.

measuring ecosystem health

Ecosystem health is measured by looking at how species, habitats, and nonliving conditions interact in the same area. An ecological community includes many populations that live together and affect one another. When biotic parts, or living parts, also interact with abiotic parts, or nonliving parts, they form an ecosystem. These systems can be very small, like microbes in the human digestive tract, or very large, like a forest linked by the carbon cycle.

Ecologists study ecosystem health because urbanization and climate change are changing ecosystems around the world. A change in one part of an ecosystem can affect other connected parts. That can lead to major shifts in the whole system. Because of this, scientists want to measure and predict the current and future health of ecosystems.

There is no single way to measure ecosystem health. The term is metaphorical, and different ecosystems are not easy to compare directly. A desert and a forest may have very different species diversity, but one is not automatically healthier than the other. Researchers use different metrics based on the goal of the study. Some look at ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration by trees or pollination by bees. Others measure rare species, fire resistance, or other biotic and abiotic factors.

One common measure is biodiversity, or biological diversity. Biodiversity describes the variety of species in an area and can be calculated with the Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index. This index uses two measurements: species richness and evenness. Species richness is the total number of different species in a local community. A freshly paved parking lot would have a richness of 0, while a rainforest would have a much higher richness. Evenness matters too. If one species dominates and the others are rare, biodiversity is lower than in a community where species are more evenly abundant.

Another health measure is the EPT index, which is used in river systems to check water quality. EPT stands for Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, which are mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. These invertebrates are sensitive to pollution, so finding them in a waterway is a sign of good water quality. In that case, the ecosystem is considered healthy.

Ecologists often cannot sample a large habitat all at once. To solve this, they use quadrats, which are small frames of a set size placed at different points in the study area. Inside each quadrat, a researcher identifies and records the species of interest. With enough samples, scientists can estimate the ecological community more accurately.

Ecological change can happen slowly over many years or quickly as a disturbance. Fires, hurricanes, and floods are examples of disturbances. They can remove nutrients and change the makeup of the biological community. Afterward, the most resistant and resilient species are more likely to survive. A resistant species can handle major disturbance with little harm and recover quickly, like dandelions after a lawn is mowed.

To study long-term change, scientists use Long Term Ecological Research sites, or LTERs. The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire is one of the longest running examples. These sites have helped scientists understand long-term patterns linked to deforestation, changes in water flow, and other major disturbances. Since it is not practical to sample the same site for many years before and after every event, researchers also compare areas with different disturbance histories.

Disturbed habitats are often patchy, so random quadrats can miss important species and give poor biodiversity estimates. Ecologists also study landscape patterns by comparing core habitats and edge habitats. A core habitat is found in the middle of a patch. An edge habitat, or boundary habitat, borders a different habitat type. For example, where a forest meets a meadow, biodiversity may be higher because species from both habitats can be present. These changes are called edge effects, and they are often measured with transects, or paths across the habitat, where small sampling sites are recorded at set intervals.

Not every edge shows an edge effect. Some edge species are invasive and can live in many habitat types, so they may not indicate a healthy ecosystem. Scientists also measure chemical features of ecosystems, such as pollution levels or soil nutrients. These data help explain biodiversity patterns in different parts of a community. Other variables, including temperature, precipitation over time, and species traits, can be harder to measure and may require advanced statistical analysis.

To study ecosystems across large areas and long time scales, ecologists are using remote sensing. This method uses satellite images to estimate variables across the globe. The data often require multivariate statistics and other complex math tools that are still being improved. As people continue to change ecosystems worldwide, conservation and restoration have become increasingly important. One restoration method is bioremediation, which uses biological organisms, usually microorganisms, to break down pollutants and restore favorable ecosystem traits. In wastewater, for example, microorganisms can help remove pollution and make the water habitable for fish.
