Physiology of the Circulatory System

El término presión arterial describe la presión lateral producida por la sangre sobre las paredes de los vasos. 
Una de las aplicaciones más importantes de la medición de la presión arterial es la comprobación del aumento de la presión arterial, una afección denominada hipertensión. Uno de cada tres adultos en los Estados Unidos sufre de hipertensión y es una de las principales causas de enfermedades cardiovasculares. El equipo necesario para una medición indirecta tradicional de la presión arterial incluye un estetoscopio y un esfigmomanómetro. El esfigmomanómetro consta de un manguito de presión arterial que contiene una vejiga distensible y una pera de goma con una válvula ajustable que, cuando está cerrada, ayuda a inflar el manguito y, cuando está abierta, libera la presión acumulada. También consiste en un tubo que conecta el manguito con la bombilla y con el manómetro que muestra la presión del manguito en milímetros de mercurio. Para registrar la lectura de la presión arterial, el examinador envuelve el manguito alrededor de la arteria braquial, coloca un estetoscopio sobre esta arteria, infla el manguito por encima de la presión sistólica esperada y luego lo desinfla mientras ausculta y observa el manómetro simultáneamente. Inicialmente, cuando el manguito está completamente inflado, la arteria se aprieta y el flujo sanguíneo se detiene. Por lo tanto, no hay sonido en la auscultación. Tras el desinflado, la primera aparición de los sonidos de Korotkoff significa la presión sistólica, que es audible debido al flujo turbulento en la arteria parcialmente comprimida. Una mayor deflación provoca una disminución continua de la presión del manguito, y los sonidos de Korotkoff permanecen audibles en todo momento, hasta el punto en que la presión del manguito está por debajo de la presión arterial mínima. Esta lectura denota la presión diastólica. La fracción de presión sistólica sobre diastólica se registra como la lectura final de la presión arterial. 
Otro indicador importante de la fisiología humana es la tasa de respiración, el número de respiraciones por minuto. El aire que respiramos viaja a través de nuestra tráquea y llega a nuestros pulmones a través de los bronquios. Dentro de los pulmones, pasa a través de los bronquiolos para finalmente ingresar a los sacos de aire especializados llamados alvéolos. Los alvéolos están rodeados de capilares sanguíneos que permiten la difusión del oxígeno inhalado en nuestro torrente sanguíneo y facilitan la excreción de dióxido de carbono, manteniendo así la homeostasis de nuestro sistema. Para los mamíferos, como los humanos, mantener la homeostasis incluye preservar una temperatura corporal relativamente constante, independiente de la temperatura ambiental circundante. Esta propiedad nos convierte en endotermos. Por lo tanto, nuestra tasa metabólica y nuestra tasa respiratoria se mantienen relativamente constantes. Por el contrario, casi todos los peces, incluidos los peces dorados, tienen una temperatura corporal interna que casi coincide con la temperatura del entorno que los rodea. Tales organismos se llaman ectotermos. Dado que no mantienen activamente una temperatura interna constante, su tasa metabólica y respiratoria cambia para compensar la variación en la temperatura ambiental circundante. La tasa de respiración en los peces se puede medir contando los latidos de las branquias, el ascenso y descenso del opérculo o la cubierta branquial, por minuto. Hay un factor más que afecta la tasa de respiración de los organismos acuáticos. Tenga en cuenta que un pez respira el oxígeno disuelto presente en su entorno. Y la cantidad de oxígeno disuelto disponible en el agua depende de la temperatura del agua. Disminuye con el aumento de la temperatura, lo que a su vez también afecta la tasa de respiración. 
En este laboratorio se examinará el sistema circulatorio humano midiendo la presión arterial en diferentes condiciones, y luego se estudiarán los efectos de la temperatura en la respiración utilizando peces.

<h4>Homeostasis</h4>
Las condiciones en el entorno externo de un organismo pueden cambiar rápida y drásticamente. Para sobrevivir, los organismos deben mantener un entorno interno bastante constante, lo que implica una regulación continua de la temperatura, el pH y otros factores. Este estado de equilibrio se conoce como homeostasis, que describe los procesos mediante los cuales los organismos mantienen sus condiciones internas óptimas. Para mantener la homeostasis, los organismos han desarrollado estructuras con funciones distintas. La fisiología es el estudio de las funciones y mecanismos normales de los diferentes sistemas del cuerpo. Por ejemplo, si el ambiente externo se vuelve más cálido que la temperatura interna ideal, el organismo activará procesos fisiológicos que evitarán que el cuerpo se caliente a la temperatura externa. Los seres humanos y muchos otros animales alcanzan la homeostasis a través de distintos procesos fisiológicos en células especializadas.
<h4>Sistemas de órganos en humanos</h4>
Uno o más tipos de células con funciones de soporte forman tejidos, que a su vez forman órganos con funciones corporales especializadas. Los sistemas de órganos consisten en dos o más órganos que trabajan juntos para proporcionar una función común. El sistema fisiológico de los vertebrados comprende 11 sistemas de órganos principales. Si bien todos los sistemas de órganos están interconectados, funcionan de manera independiente unos de otros.
El cuerpo está cubierto por el sistema tegumentario, que consta de piel, cabello, uñas, receptores sensoriales y varias glándulas. Además de proteger las estructuras internas, los órganos tegumentarios detectan muchas características del entorno externo y ayudan a regular la temperatura corporal. Internamente, los órganos están protegidos y sostenidos por el sistema esquelético, que comprende huesos, cartílagos, tendones y ligamentos. El sistema esquelético también proporciona fijación a los músculos que componen el sistema muscular. Los músculos pueden mover el cuerpo moviendo el esqueleto o contraerse para mover sustancias a través de órganos huecos. El sistema nervioso está formado por el cerebro, la médula espinal y los nervios periféricos. Interpreta los estímulos sensoriales y dirige el comportamiento del organismo para controlar los procesos fisiológicos junto con otros sistemas. El sistema endocrino está formado por glándulas secretoras de hormonas y órganos, como la hipófisis, la tiroides, el páncreas, los ovarios y los testículos. Regula el crecimiento, el metabolismo y la reproducción junto con otros sistemas. El sistema respiratorio controla el intercambio de gases para suministrar oxígeno al cuerpo, ya que elimina el dióxido de carbono en los pulmones después del paso del aire a través de la cavidad nasal, la faringe, la laringe, la tráquea y los bronquios. El sistema digestivo procesa y descompone los alimentos que se ingieren a través de la cavidad oral y el esófago, y luego se mueven a través del estómago, el intestino delgado y el intestino grueso antes de ser excretados a través del recto y el ano. Los nutrientes se absorben en el intestino delgado y grueso y luego son procesados por el hígado. El sistema urinario concentra y elimina los desechos nitrogenados a través del riñón, la vejiga y la uretra. También libera al cuerpo del exceso de agua. El sistema cardiovascular o circulatorio está formado por el corazón, los vasos sanguíneos y la sangre, y suministra oxígeno y nutrientes a los tejidos, al tiempo que elimina el dióxido de carbono y los productos de desecho en todo el cuerpo. El sistema linfático mantiene la respuesta inmunitaria del cuerpo a través de los glóbulos blancos o linfocitos (alojados en la médula ósea roja), el timo, los vasos linfáticos, el conducto torácico, el bazo y los ganglios linfáticos. Finalmente, el sistema reproductivo prepara las células reproductivas de los organismos. En los hombres, los testículos y el pene comprenden el sistema reproductivo, mientras que en las mujeres el útero, los ovarios y la vagina comprenden el sistema reproductivo.
<h4>Fisiología del Sistema Circulatorio</h4>
La fisiología de los organismos unicelulares y los animales pluricelulares basales, como las esponjas, suele ser sencilla. Por ejemplo, el pequeño tamaño y la gran relación superficie/volumen de los microorganismos les permite alcanzar la regulación por difusión a través de la membrana celular. Del mismo modo, el agua de mar circula a través de los poros de las esponjas, transportando nutrientes y productos de desecho hacia y desde sus células. Los animales más complejos han desarrollado sistemas circulatorios para mover la sangre por todo el cuerpo para transportar nutrientes, productos de desecho, hormonas y otras moléculas, mientras que los sistemas respiratorios permiten el intercambio de gases entre el sistema circulatorio y el entorno externo. 
El sistema circulatorio de los animales puede ser abierto o cerrado. Los sistemas circulatorios abiertos suelen estar presentes en muchos invertebrados y consisten en uno o más corazones simples, una red de vasos y espacios interconectados que bañan directamente los órganos internos en un fluido que permite el intercambio de materiales. Los vertebrados tienen sistemas circulatorios cerrados, en los que la sangre está confinada dentro de un sistema de vasos cerrados que se ramifica ampliamente en los tejidos para asegurar el intercambio de materiales. Este sistema de vasos cerrados está conectado a un corazón con venas que transportan sangre desde los tejidos hacia el corazón y arterias que transportan sangre desde el corazón al resto del cuerpo. Los corazones de cuatro cámaras, como en los humanos, están asociados con dos bucles de vasos. En los seres humanos, la sangre sin oxígeno de los órganos ingresa al corazón a través de la aurícula derecha, que se contrae para empujar la sangre al ventrículo derecho, que a su vez envía sangre a los pulmones. Después del intercambio de gases en los pulmones, la sangre rica en oxígeno regresa a la aurícula izquierda y luego es empujada hacia el ventrículo izquierdo. Esta última cámara es más muscular que las demás y con una fuerte contracción, es capaz de bombear la sangre al resto del cuerpo.
Los sistemas circulatorios cerrados permiten una circulación rápida de la sangre, lo que a su vez permite un transporte rápido y eficiente de sustancias por todo el cuerpo, así como una presión arterial más alta que en los sistemas abiertos. La presión arterial se genera por la contracción de los ventrículos del corazón a medida que la sangre es forzada a entrar en las arterias. A medida que los ventrículos del corazón se relajan, la presión arterial disminuye.
<h4>Presión sanguínea</h4>
En los seres humanos, el funcionamiento del sistema circulatorio se puede evaluar midiendo la presión arterial y la frecuencia cardíaca correspondiente en un individuo. La presión arterial se mide en milímetros de mercurio (mmHg), que es la altura en milímetros a la que se eleva el mercurio en una columna debido a la presión ejercida sobre ella. La frecuencia cardíaca se mide como latidos por minuto. Debido a los movimientos de contracción y relajación del corazón, las lecturas de la presión arterial constan de dos números: sistólica y diastólica. La presión sistólica se mide durante las contracciones de los ventrículos y la presión diastólica es la presión mínima en las arterias durante el reposo entre contracciones. En general, las presiones sistólicas de 90-120 mmHg y las presiones diastólicas de 60-80 mmHg se consideran saludables. Cuando se trata de la frecuencia cardíaca, 60-100 latidos por minuto se considera saludable para los adultos. Los atletas generalmente tienen frecuencias cardíacas más bajas, ya que los ejercicios cardiovasculares elevan la frecuencia cardíaca y condicionan el corazón para bombear de manera más eficiente, lo que eventualmente reduce la frecuencia cardíaca en reposo.
Los niveles elevados de presión arterial durante períodos prolongados o la hipertensión pueden dañar los vasos sanguíneos y se han relacionado con ataques cardíacos y accidentes cerebrovasculares. Los investigadores descubrieron que los efectos cardiovasculares de la presión sistólica y diastólica son diferentes, de modo que las tasas de eventos cardiovasculares están fuertemente asociadas con la presión sistólica. Por lo tanto, el número de pacientes con hipertensión sistólica que sufren eventos cardiovasculares es mayor que el número de pacientes con hipertensión diastólica3. Los factores genéticos, así como el estilo de vida y los factores ambientales, pueden causar hipertensión y enfermedades cardiovasculares. Por ejemplo, el consumo de grandes cantidades de sal provoca la retención de un exceso de agua en el cuerpo, elevando la presión arterial y tensando los vasos sanguíneos. Cualquier lesión en los vasos sanguíneos los hace propensos a las lesiones, lo que proporciona superficies para la acumulación de placa, lo que eventualmente endurece los vasos sanguíneos y reduce la eficiencia del flujo sanguíneo.
Mediciones de la presión arterial
Los esfigmomanómetros se utilizan para medir la presión arterial. Están compuestos por un manguito inflable que se conecta a una bomba (manual o automática) y un manómetro. La forma más eficiente de usar un esfigmomanómetro es en la arteria braquial en la parte superior del brazo, que está al nivel del corazón. Los esfigmomanómetros se utilizan junto con un estetoscopio, que es un dispositivo médico acústico que se utiliza para escuchar sonidos internos a través de un disco de metal o resonador. El estetoscopio se coloca justo debajo del esfigmomanómetro, justo encima de la parte interna del codo de la persona para medir los sonidos de la presión arterial sistólica y diastólica. El manguito se infla a 200 mmHg, deteniendo el flujo sanguíneo al pellizcar los vasos sanguíneos y es una cantidad segura de presión que se aplica al brazo. A medida que el manguito se desinfla, los vasos sanguíneos comienzan a abrirse y se permite que la sangre vuelva a fluir. La presión arterial sistólica se representa por el primer ruido que se escucha y la presión diastólica se determina por el último ruido que se escucha. Estos ruidos se llaman sonidos de Korotkoff, que son el sonido de la sangre siendo empujada a la fuerza a través de los vasos por el corazón.
<h4>Sistema respiratorio</h4>
El sistema circulatorio trabaja en estrecha colaboración con el sistema respiratorio para proporcionar oxígeno a los tejidos mientras elimina el dióxido de carbono. Diferentes organismos han desarrollado distintas estructuras respiratorias para el intercambio de gases. Por ejemplo, muchos animales acuáticos intercambian gases a través de las branquias. Los movimientos de las branquias se observan fácilmente y se pueden utilizar para calcular la tasa de respiración de los organismos acuáticos contando el número de veces que el organismo mueve su cubierta branquial u opérculo. La tasa de respiración puede cambiar con la temperatura porque las moléculas de oxígeno se transportan a diferentes velocidades dependiendo de cuán cálido o frío sea un ambiente. En un ambiente acuático, la cantidad de oxígeno disuelto disponible en el agua disminuye con el aumento de la temperatura. La disminución del oxígeno tiene efectos en la tasa de respiración de los organismos acuáticos, dada su capacidad para difundir el oxígeno a través de sus cuerpos. Por otro lado, los animales terrestres tienen estructuras respiratorias internas, como los pulmones. En los seres humanos, la respiración implica la inhalación mediante la contracción del diafragma para aspirar aire. Cuando el diafragma se relaja, el aire se libera pasivamente de los pulmones.
El tabaquismo es la principal causa de cáncer de pulmón, responsable del 80-90% de las muertes por cáncer de pulmón. Cada año, más de 120,000 estadounidenses mueren de cáncer de pulmón asociado al tabaquismo y representan una gran parte de las muertes prevenibles. En conjunto, el estilo de vida contribuye a la salud de los sistemas circulatorio y respiratorio y una cantidad significativa de muertes se puede prevenir mediante cambios en el estilo de vida.

The circulatory system moves blood, oxygen, nutrients, and wastes through the body to support homeostasis. Homeostasis is the stable internal balance that organisms must maintain even when the outside environment changes. Physiology is the study of how body systems work, and the circulatory system is one of the key systems that helps keep internal conditions steady.

Body systems are built from cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Humans have 11 major organ systems, and they work together even though each system has its own main job. The integumentary system protects the body and helps control temperature. The skeletal system supports organs and gives muscles a place to attach. The muscular system moves the body and can also move substances through hollow organs. The nervous system controls responses to stimuli. The endocrine system uses hormones to regulate growth, metabolism, and reproduction. The respiratory system exchanges gases in the lungs. The digestive system breaks down food and absorbs nutrients. The urinary system removes nitrogenous wastes and extra water. The lymphatic system helps immune defense. The reproductive system produces reproductive cells.

In simple organisms, transport can happen by diffusion because of their small size and large surface area to volume ratio. Sponges also rely on water flow through their pores to carry nutrients and wastes. More complex animals need circulatory systems to move materials farther and faster. These systems transport nutrients, waste products, hormones, and other molecules, while the respiratory system supports gas exchange with the outside environment.

Animal circulatory systems can be open or closed. Open circulatory systems are common in many invertebrates. They use one or more simple hearts, a vessel network, and open spaces that bathe organs in fluid for exchange. Vertebrates have closed circulatory systems, where blood stays inside vessels that branch through tissues. In this system, veins carry blood toward the heart, and arteries carry blood away from the heart.

Humans have a four-chambered heart with two circulation loops. Oxygen-poor blood from the body enters the right atrium, moves to the right ventricle, and is sent to the lungs. After gas exchange, oxygen-rich blood returns to the left atrium and then moves to the left ventricle. The left ventricle has a thicker muscle wall because it must pump blood to the rest of the body. Closed circulatory systems move blood quickly and efficiently and produce higher blood pressure than open systems.

Blood pressure and heart rate are used to measure how well the circulatory system is working. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, or mmHg. Heart rate is measured in beats per minute. Blood pressure has two numbers. Systolic pressure is the pressure during ventricular contraction. Diastolic pressure is the lowest arterial pressure between contractions. Healthy adult values are usually about 90-120 mmHg for systolic pressure and 60-80 mmHg for diastolic pressure. A healthy adult heart rate is usually 60-100 beats per minute, and athletes often have lower resting heart rates because exercise makes the heart pump more efficiently.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, can damage blood vessels and is linked to heart attack and stroke. The transcript notes that systolic pressure is strongly associated with cardiovascular events, and systolic hypertension is more closely linked to those events than diastolic hypertension. Hypertension can result from genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. For example, eating a lot of salt can cause the body to retain extra water. That raises blood pressure and strains blood vessels. Injured vessel walls can also encourage plaque buildup, which can stiffen vessels and reduce blood flow.

Blood pressure is often measured with a sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope. A sphygmomanometer uses an inflatable cuff, a pump, and a pressure gauge. It is usually placed on the brachial artery in the upper arm, level with the heart. The cuff is inflated to 200 mmHg, which briefly stops blood flow and is safe for the arm. As the cuff deflates, blood starts flowing again. The first sound heard is the systolic pressure, and the last sound heard is the diastolic pressure. These sounds are called Korotkoff sounds, and they come from blood being forced through the vessels.

The circulatory system also works closely with the respiratory system to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Many aquatic animals use gills for gas exchange, and their respiration rate can be estimated by counting operculum movements. Respiration rate can change with temperature because oxygen moves differently in warm or cool environments. In water, dissolved oxygen decreases as temperature rises, which affects aquatic organisms that rely on diffusion. Terrestrial animals use internal structures such as lungs. In humans, inhalation happens when the diaphragm contracts and pulls air in, and exhalation happens when the diaphragm relaxes. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and accounts for 80-90% of lung cancer deaths. The transcript also notes that more than 120,000 Americans die each year from smoking-associated lung cancer, showing how lifestyle choices can affect both circulatory and respiratory health.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
