Un polímero es una cadena de moléculas pequeñas, llamadas monómeros, que se mantienen unidas por enlaces covalentes. Los organismos pueden sintetizar polímeros biológicos o los científicos pueden sintetizar polímeros en el laboratorio. Los polímeros que se componen del mismo tipo de monómeros se conocen como homopolímeros y los que se componen de diferentes tipos de monómeros se conocen como heteropolímeros.La celulosa, el polímero natural más abundante, es un homopolímero de glucosa, mientras que la agarosa, un polímero de origen marino, es un heteropolímero de galactosa y 3, 6-anhidro-L-galactopiranosa. Los polímeros tienen varias estructuras dependiendo de su tipo de monómeros. Los polímeros lineales son largas cadenas de monómeros.Por ejemplo, la celulosa es un polímero lineal que se mantiene unido por enlaces beta 1, 4-glicosídicos. Los polímeros ramificados tienen cadenas que se separan de la cadena principal, como la amilopectina, un componente del almidón que se ramifica después de 24 a 30 monómeros a través de enlaces alfa 1, 6-glicosídicos. Los polímeros reticulados tienen dos o más cadenas que se mantienen juntas en varios puntos como una escalera, como un polímero de escalera de silicio construido sintéticamente, o forman una red compleja de cadenas entrelazadas, como el gel formado por pectinas en jaleas y mermeladas.

La palabra polímero se deriva de las palabras griegas “poli”, que significa “muchos” y “mer”, que significa “partes”. Los polímeros son cadenas largas de moléculas compuestas por unidades repetitivas de moléculas más pequeñas, conocidas como monómeros. O bien ocurren naturalmente, como el ADN y las proteínas, o pueden construirse sintéticamente, como los plásticos. Tienen diversas características estructurales, como cadenas lineales, cadenas ramificadas o redes complejas, que contribuyen a las propiedades que exhiben. Además, los grupos funcionales que pueden estar presentes en un polímero definen sus propiedades. Las unidades individuales de un polímero se mantienen juntas por enlaces covalentes estables que se producen a través de la adición o la polimerización por condensación.
 Polimerización por adición
 La polimerización por adición ocurre cuando los monómeros que participan en la reacción tienen enlaces dobles. Esta reacción requiere la presencia de una molécula externa que tiene un electrón de valencia no apareado para iniciar la reacción. Este electrón no apareado es altamente reactivo y forma un enlace con uno de los enlaces dobles en un monómero, lo que lleva al monómero a tener un electrón de valencia no apareado. Este electrón de valencia no apareado entonces se asocia con otro monómero con enlaces dobles que conducen a una reacción en cadena donde la molécula sigue agregando otros monómeros con enlaces dobles a ella. Esto resulta en la formación de una cadena de monómeros, con el que se agregó más recientemente teniendo un electrón de valencia no apareado. Esta reacción por adición continúa hasta que dos cadenas con electrones no apareados reaccionan entre sí para formar un enlace. Esto elimina cualquier electron de valencia no pareados, resultando en la terminación de la reacción.
 Polimerización por condensación
 La polimerización por condensación, también conocida como polimerización por crecimiento gradual, requiere un catalizador, como un ácido o una enzima, y los monómeros deben tener al menos dos grupos funcionales reactivos, como aminas o ácidos carboxílicos. Los grupos funcionales de los monómeros reaccionan entre sí para formar vínculos como los de éster o amida y van acompañados de la pérdida de una molécula pequeña, como el agua. La polimerización por condensación es una reacción más lenta en comparación con la polimerización por adición y, en muchos casos, requiere la presencia de calor.
