The Second Law of Thermodynamics

La entropía, abreviada como S, es la medida termodinámica del desorden o aleatoriedad. Los sistemas con más desorden tienen una entropía más alta que aquellos con menos desorden.
Por ejemplo, una cadena de aminoácidos desplegada tiene una entropía más alta que cuando la cadena está correctamente plegada porque la cadena lineal es más flexible y desorganizada que una proteína compacta.
La segunda ley de la termodinámica establece que la entropía de un sistema aislado siempre aumenta. Esto significa que todo se vuelve más desordenado sin la participación externa.
Los sistemas aislados rara vez ocurren de forma natural, por lo que la termodinámica a menudo examina el cambio en la entropía de todo el universo. El cambio en la entropía del universo incluye tanto los cambios de entropía del sistema que se está estudiando como su entorno.

Los científicos se refieren a la medida de aleatoriedad o desorden dentro de un sistema como entropía. Alta entropía significa alto desorden y poca energía. Para comprender mejor la entropía, pensemos en el dormitorio de un estudiante. Si no se le pusiera energía ni trabajo, la habitación rápidamente se volvería desordenada. Existiría en un estado muy desordenado, de alta entropía. Se debe poner energía en el sistema, en la forma del estudiante trabajando y guardando todo, para que la habitación vuelva a un estado de limpieza y orden. Este estado es de baja entropía.

Los procesos que implican un aumento de la entropía del sistema (ΔS > 0) suelen ser espontáneos; sin embargo, abundan los ejemplos de lo contrario. Al ampliar la consideración de los cambios de entropía para incluir el entorno, podemos llegar a una conclusión significativa sobre la relación entre esta propiedad y la espontaneidad. En los modelos termodinámicos, el sistema y el entorno lo comprenden todo, es decir, el universo, por lo que lo siguiente es cierto:

Entropy helps predict whether a process will happen on its own. Entropy is a measure of randomness or disorder in a system. High entropy means high disorder and low energy. A student’s bedroom is a simple example. If no work is done, the room becomes messy over time. That messy state is highly disordered and has high entropy. To make the room clean again, energy must be added as the student puts things away. That organized state has low entropy.

Processes that increase the entropy of the system, written as ΔS &gt; 0, are often spontaneous. Spontaneous means a process can occur without outside help. However, there are many exceptions. To understand spontaneity more fully, entropy changes in the surroundings must also be included. In thermodynamic models, the system and its surroundings make up the universe. The total change in entropy is written as ΔSuniv = ΔSsys + ΔSsurr.

The second law of thermodynamics connects entropy with spontaneous change. It states that all spontaneous changes increase the entropy of the universe. If ΔSuniv is greater than 0, the process is spontaneous. If ΔSuniv is less than 0, the process is nonspontaneous, although the opposite direction would be spontaneous. If ΔSuniv equals 0, the system is at equilibrium.
